Metric vs. standard or American thread question

I started threading the ends of tangs with metric sizes because an old timer told me metric size threaded items hold better. Some of you machinists or tool and die or eng. maybe tell me if this is true. The oldtimer is a gunsmith, not a complete machinist.

I would think metric would "hold" better because the thread pitch is usually finer on metric than english. Instead og using 1/4 - 20 you could use 1/4 - 28 and get the same effect.
