I may be travailing to Mexico City next month on business. Does anyone know what the carry Laws are and what the general attitude is toward Knives.

There is no man worth a leke,
Be he sturdy, be he meke,
But he bear a basilard.

I read in a Tactical Knives Magazine article that it is not legal to carry (what/where?) didn't say, in Mexico City. However in the article, "It Happened To Me" The person was carrying a Spyderco Endura. He needed a cab one night and the "cabby" took him to another location where they tried to do him harm. He managed to put an end to it by sticking the knife into the side of the cabby's throat. He then pulled over, handed over the keys, and ran. If I were going to Mexico I would take a lot of sharp knives with me. Regardless of the current knife laws. I always do. Jeff

Never, ever, ever get into a green cab in Mexico City. And I wouldn't carry either. Police have absolutely no sense of humor in Mexico.

Lots of things I have read have stated that the Green cabs are essentially run by organized crime syndicates and you are asking to get held up if you are a tourist. There was a Wall Street Journal article on crime agaisnt tourists in mexico about a year or so ago, I guess. My father organized a trip for us last year and he also ran across several articles in travel magazines, etc about the green cabs.

As for other cabs, I don't know. We never traveled in any. But in Mexico City, the subway will get you most anywhere you need to go and tour buses will take you to any of the surrounding areas like Teotihuacan (definitely worth the trip. Take a full day and go there. A must see. But read up on it first. it's bewildering if you don't know what you're looking at, and there's a LOT to look at)

I have no specific knowledge of Mexico, but a good general rule of thumb is that your knife is a "picnic knife" because you are travelling and don't have a kitchen to go to for food preparation. There are very few cities anywhere where it would do to tell a cop you are carrying a knife "for protection."

And I think I'll move this to our new knife law forum. "General" index, scroll down.

I remember reading somewhere on the forums that it is illegal to carry a knife in Mexico. And I would really not want to land in a Mexican jail. I also wouldn't want to walk around in Mexico without a knife. I would conceal well, and carry a clean $100 bill - I've never heard of a Mexican cop refusing a bribe unless it was too small. Keep a low profile and try not to attract any attention, the criminals in Mexico are half your problem, the cops are the other half.
