Meyerco? Are these decent for the price, or cheap crap?

Hey folks,

I was browsing around on Darrel Ralph's site after buying my first HTM Gun Hammer, and I noticed he designs knives for Meyerco. They're super cheap, and I was wondering what the quality is like. I am hoping to use them as intro knives for my friends, and just general little toys to try out some different designs. Anyone have any experience with Meyerco?

I've got two catch dogs and I think for the bucks and the size of the knife and build quality it is outstanding value. keepem sharp

Depends. Some are just impractical gimmick knives and/or poorly made. I don't know of any that use very high end steel, but some are adequate.

For example, I'm a neck knife freak. They make the $8 Necklance models, which are cheap flimsy junk.

However, they make two of my favs, the Law Dog and the Wharning. Both are class acts.

Actually, the Law Dog has been discontinued. I wear one daily for some time now, and believe me, I've been through a lot of neckers; liked this one so much I grabbed and stashed another; even had a better sheath made for it, although the one that came with it was okay.

So, my overall assessment is that maybe 25% of their line is actually useful.

I've owned several Meyerco knives. They generally are a very good value for what you pay, in that most of them are extremely affordable and MOST of them are functional. I have a Meyerco Persian that is a great little self-defense fixed blade. There is no other way to say it, though: they're a low-end manufacturer, compared to the rest of the market.

I recently traded for a Meyerco Shockwave, and I'm impressed with how solid it seems. It's a nice heavyweight folder. And they've got some Blackie Collins designs that don't look half bad. Meyerco may be one of those companies with hits and misses, and you better do your homework or you may get stuck with a "miss".

I would like to see better steel on the Kirby Lambert and Greg Lightfoot collaborations, but stay in the same price range. If I found a good deal on those models, I would get them.

I just recieved my meyerco maxx q with a honed radian blade and for the money ($30 on amazon) I think it was a good choice. It locks up solid, it's sharp enough to shave with out the box and it is well balanced. It is definitely not worth more than what I paid for it, but it is all the knife I need.
