Hi,
Bought a new knife today.
Its a Mererco #MCRASCAL with a side button lock. It can be opened with one hand by putting your finger at the joint end of the blade and flicking it open, cool!
Being new to knives I had never seen anything like this befor.
At first I was just going to get it because it was the size of blade I was looking for and it had the button on the side to release the lock. I thought that was a preaty cool looking release.
As I was paying for it ($33, to much?) the guy said (as he showed me) these are really cool, as you take it out of your pocket you can flick it open like this.
I thought Dam, now that is cool:)
So I paid for it and must have opened and close the thing 100 times over my noon hour:)
The blade says AUS8A on it. Its sharp but not razor sharp. Going to fix that tonight.
Was wondering what you guys think of Meyerco knifes.
I would guess its maybe a lower end knife from the price I paid, but I really like the design with the button release and the one hand opening.
Who else is making knives with the button release and the fast one hand opening like the Meyerco?

Is the AUS8A going to hold a better edge then my leatherman wave blade?

Thanks
pahl

There are 2 versions of the Meyerco Rascal, the one you have is a drop point version with no thumb studs and they also have one with a somewhat upswept blade shape with thumbstuds. The assisted opening feature is a Blackie Collins design and works really fast. For the price, Meyerco knives are not bad, but don't put too much trust on that small button lock on the Rascal. I have the Meyerco Stingray model with a similar button lock and I've been able to make it close with moderate pressure on the blade's spine. I recommend you only use the Rascal for light use like opening envelopes and such.

Kershaw has the Ken Onion designs with the "Speed Safe" mechanism and linerlocks that works in similar fashion to the Meyerco Rascal, but Kershaw's quality is far above Meyerco's. You won't find any blade wobble on a Kershaw/Onion folder like you do on the Meyerco Rascal, plus some of Kershaw's inexpensive models like the Scallion, have a safety feature to prevent the knife from opening in your pocket.

Timberline has the Discovery folder which also has an "assisted opening" feature and a cam lock, but the quality is still not as good as Kershaw's in my opinion.

SOG will be coming out with one called the Flash and I also heard that Al Mar knives is supposed to be coming out with an assited opener too.

AUS-8 is a good steel for blades and sharpens fairly easy. I'm not sure what steel Leatherman uses on their tools but AUS-8 holds a good edge.

As far as button locks, you'll find them mostly on automatic folders, but you'll also find them on the Masters Of Defence (MOD) CQD manual folder and on the Boker Top Lock.

Would you have a link were I could see the Kershaw?

Blackie Collins design is the one I got. Was playing around with it today at work. Not really very sharp. Would cut paper, but it had a hard time with card board boxs:(
I going to work on that problem tonight by putting on my own edge on it:)

Thanks for the info

This is Kershaw's Ken Onion Page...

I carry the boa and I highly recommend it. It has a "flipper" (what looks like a finger guard built into the blade) that you can push on to release the blade. The torsion assist is about as close to being an auto without actually being an auto. It doesn't have the push-button lock release that you are looking for, but it's a great knife. If you can find them, there's also the discontinued Richochet and Random Task knives (I own a Ricochet as well). I've played with the Timberline and I'd agree with El Cid in that the quality seems higher in the Kershaw. But the Boa is around 90 bucks or so compared to around fifty for the Timberline. The Scallion and the Chive are cheap, but a little small for me. Hope this helps.
