i'm somewhat new to knives and in my search for a cheap everyday folder i was recommended a meyerco paradox (seen below) by a friend. he was very proud of his, stating that it was the best, cheapest knife he's ever seen. i played around with it for a little bit and found it suits me well. it has a good weight and the mechanics of using both the blade and screwdriver work well for me.

i am wondering if anyone here has any experience with them, i did a search but came up with nothing substantial. i am curious about the usual things; is the AUS-8 used a good steel (i looked at the faq but i want to know about this knife specifically)? has anyone had one for long-term and have any problems arisen? is there anything better for 10$ shipped? is it a good deal for 10$ shipped?

sorry for all the questions but being new i am eager to learn, thanks for your time.

Welcome to Bladeforums!

It's not my kind of knife, but it looks like a good little utility folder. AUS-8 has been around long enough I'm sure they did a decent job on it. That has got to be a Blackie Collins design. He does good work, but seems to get them manufactured in inexpensive, light-weight editions. Which is nothing to be ashamed of! It sure beats using a cutting blade for a screwdriver or pry bar.

AUS-8 is a good steel for sure, as long as it is heat treated right. For $10, it might be worth a shot. Get the knife and see if you like it!

Personally, I'd rather have an Opinel, or keep saving for a Spyderco or mayeb a Buck 110/112. I doubt very much if, for $10 shipped, that the heat treat is going to be good. A friend of mine took an "inexpensive" Carson knock-off knife manufactured overseas, rockwelled the blad,e and made his own blade for it. His blade is 61 RC. The other blade was 47! Way to soft for a steel blade to hold an edge. The Opinel knives I have seen have all been good cutters.

Good luck on your decision!

update:

i was poking around the local pawn shop and turns out they had almost a box full of paradoxes that apparently weren't selling too well since they were 4$ for two if you got one partially serrated and one plain edge. i played around with them for a little in the shop and then bought 2 of each kind. i've been carrying a partial edge all day and i really like it.

the blade was shaving sharp when i bought it and so far it hasn't lost anything over the course of a few letter openings, some box cutting and sliding in between doors to help my friend get into her house after losing her keys. the lock-up is very solid and i tried the whack-the-spine test and found there was no play and the lock stayed secure. the knife has good weight and feels right in my pocket, i've had it tip-down in the little carpenter pocket on my jeans and it is very fast to present from this position. i like having a screwdriver/pliers assembly on it too, the knife just feels very handy.

i'm pretty sure it is going to stay my EDC until i can convince myself that carrying around a 100$ benchmade is a good idea.

First of all you got a good price. NDS lists the paradox for $20.00. The design looks like it has a nice selection of functions that you don't usually see combined. The paradox is a Blackie Collins design which is another plus. AUS-8 is an alloy that takes a very sharp edge and holds it moderately well. It is a bargain to get it in such a cheap knife. You tell us how it works. It looks good on paper.
