MFS vs. SA?

I can not decide which one to get, MFS or SA? Maybe I'll get both eventually...
In the meantime, I'm taking the almighty dollar into consideration which brings me down to the price difference... leaving me to wonder if I've missed something in their spec's. Is there any difference between them other than their shapes/grinds?

Next question: Which knife would have the stronger tip?

my guess would be the MFS has a stronger tip, cause the is more broad, a wider angle than the SA point. at least, that's what it looks like to me. Almost kinda looks like a rounded tanto edge.

SA all the way. It is thicker stock than the MFS, so it is stronger. Better design and a better knife with better (thicker) materials.

I would tend to agree that the MFS is not as thick as an SA, mainly because it is about an inch longer and generally larger overall... but it weighs in at the SA's 6oz.

Does anyone know the exact (current) spec's on the SA and MFS?

I also wonder which grind I would end up with on an SA:
This?

or this?

One is obviously going to be a bit stronger and the other will cut a bit better... The question is which one is currently available?

If the SA is in fact .25" thick, I'll be leaning that way I think.

I know that it is thicker. The current production SA has the flat ground like the pictures you posted at the bottom.

SA

Model SA Overall Length: 7.25"
Blade Length: 3.25"

MFS

Overall Length: 7.5"
Blade Length: 3.25"
Drop point Blade with full bevel Grind. Tiger Stripe Finish, smooth cord wrap
Includes Kydex carrying system

BTW, the (M)y (F)irst (S)trider can be offered at a lower price due to the fact that there isn't as much steel used in making this knife. That and the finish isn't as high a quality. Less work on the wrap as well.

"if you are going to be prying or beating the **** out of it get a db man. just my opinion."

That's my opinion also, although we're both off topic... :)

the last i looked my MFS had a 4" blade, just a bit longer than the AR blade in fact. thickness wise about the same.

MFS slices better, but SA punches out really sweet looking holes in anything you care to throw at it. it's a sharpened nail. just get rid of that treklok and use the old belt loop so the shealth nests inside the pants. comfy and ready.
now your wife might question why there's always a 7"rod of harderned steel inside your pants, but that's another story.

btw, anyone willing to part with their old DB? i really miss the old grind.

G'day Ryan,

You're definitely among the good guys. My respect always.
Let's just say I do have a fair idea on all the blades I own, every nick and scratch. So I stand by the last post, not because a mere inch really matters, but because I'm stubborn on facts.
Cheers and keep safe.

Lynn,

Oui oui that's the one. Thanks!! Must act quick.
Cheers~

Thanks for all of the replies guys... I've decided to go with the SA for 5 reasons. The SA is thicker stock. It is double-wrapped instead of the MFS's single wrap. It is shorter (better for carry). And lastly, I like its constantly arching edge... One of my all-time favorite do-everything knives is the little Spyerco Dragonfly - which coincidentally shares the same basic blade shape and flat-grind. It seems that every part of the edge is equally capable of doing the job.

rock on, dashunde!!

my favorite folder is the dragonfly, too. I used it for close to five years now, and my first (and only strider) is the SA.

Good choice either way.

Lynn,

Upon closer inspection, the DB at TAD's not quite the one I've been looking for. The old DB has a more obtuse tip, with very pronounced tanto bevel, like the last gen WB. Guess I'll keep looking.
Cheers~

wow, the sheath on top (of the TAD picture) is neat.

Is that a different sheath, or does that still have the teclock on it?
