Here is a coarser type of micarta on a 112. Green canvas micarta handle on brass. A Smoky Mountain exclusive I think. There was a matching 110 I passed on previously because of the bill board blade etch but now wish I had not. I like matching pairs.
I used inexpensive micarta on my home-made barehead and the white fabric showed through when I sanded it. I dunked it in some red dye for a real "custom" effect. The color has settled down with age.
Many years ago my Brother David had a 3'×4' sheet of brown micarta he gave to Leroy. My personal favorite is Ivory micarta or white that has mellowed with age and handling. It looks great with brass or nickel silver frames.

I don't own one that early but stay on the lookout when in pawnshops and curio malls. I would have grabbed the one you found in a minute - very nice pickup! OH
Some woods make really nice looking scales, but when it comes to actually using a knife, Micarta beats wood in pretty much every practical aspect. It's especially good when your hands are damp or wet compared to other materials.
