Hi folks

I am about to give a local knife maker an order for a Loveless style knife and I would like to find some linen micarta similar in quality and look to the micarta that Loveless used.

Can anyone please tell me where I might find such micarta and what I should ask for?

Thanks...........:)

Steven

In my experience the Micarta used in the Loveless shop varied. Green canvas Micarta or black canvas. I get green canvas or black linen form Tru-Grit her in California for other colors I go to Sheffield Supply in Florida.

Hey David, you're up bright and early! :)

Steven, I believe the Loveless shop has always purchased their micarta from Angus Campbell in downtown Los Angeles. Picked up a whole bunch of "old school" micarta the other day from the 60's... :)

Micarta isn't a decorative product (it's an electrical insulator), so the colors and textures may vary slightly. Also, green and natural micarta will get darker with age and handling.

Give Stuart a call their number is (323) 587-1236, Bob actually talked them into carrying micarta. They're a bit pricier than the knifemaking supply places, but they have some nice stuff -and it's nice to support local businesses. Heck, didn't Burr-King used to be in El Monte, Ca?

Hope this helps.

I absolutely, 100% guarantee that Marcus and David are much more familiar with the intricacies of Loveless work than I am.... but I have been fortunate to get to fondle a Loveless/Merrit Wilderness this week, and the green micarta on it looks just like the pieces I've bought over the years from a few different sources. :)

Plus 1 about supporting local business Marcus!!!! As to where that would be in South Africa, I got noth'n! ;) :D

I recently sent a pair of scales to SA (maybe the same maker) he could not obtain what I wanted there. Let me know what you want maybe I can send you enough for scales as a "sample".

It was actually a late morning Marcus! No Banker's hrs for me.

Marcus this was brilliant information. I called Stuart last night and we are going to complete an order. THANK YOU so much for sharing this........

David I thank you so much for the offer and I will compile a PM and contact you over the weekend. I would really appreciate your help in acquiring some specific colors and quality.:)

even in the time ive been making, i notice a difference in quality of micarta from 15 years ago to the stuff now. I dont know if the actual manufacturing process or materials used have changed slightly, but the stuff I was getting back then seemed to have better "bonding" between the layers.

Steven contacted me by PM with this query, and my advice would have been to e-mail Jim Merritt/The Loveless Shop(and would have provided this e-mail address), as I had no idea where they sourced their materials. David and Marcus provided valuable product information, not only for Steven, but for ANY person interested in the micarta most often used in The Loveless Shop. Well done, gentlemen!

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson
