Posted this in Hammer & Tongs and got no replies yet so maybe I can find some help in here...

Split Scale material probably isn't what this is called but I don't know how to reference it. For my next couple of knives I've bought 2 of these awesome little blanks:

I've only ever done a single material for the handles on my knives so far and for these I am wanting something like this with Black canvas micarta bolsters:

I bought black micarta pin material to fit the two front holes on the blank and I'll be backing that up with spaulted pecan on one knife and desert ironwood burl on the other.

Doing this seems simple enough but I would love to get a heads up on any tips or tricks that I may not be aware of. Are there any issues in just epoxying loose liner material between the two handle materials like in the picture above? I cant imagine there's any other way to secure it. I plan to do a single thin piece of white or maybe a piece of jade green g11 where the example above has the red and white. I'll also place liners along the tang like i do on all my blades but haven't totally decided on colors there yet.

Any thoughts or tips are very welcome.

Thanks!

I have seen handles like that before. There's one maker I can think of, just off the top of my head, who has this on at least half - if not more, of the blades I've seen on their site. However, on the ones I've seen there's no spacers or epoxy used as filler. Here's a link if you need any inspiration: http://www.dervishknives.com/

I do that kind of construction fairly often. I also dovetail the joints, but they can look good square fit as well. I usually do my joint fitting on the disk grinder. If you set the work rest, then leave it alone, your joint will match, whether it's 34 degrees, 47 degrees, or whatever. The number doesn't matter, just don't move the work rest in between fitting the bolster and the handle.

As far as liners go, I usually will fit both parts, then superglue whatever liners I want on to the handle piece. Once you have your liners glued to your handle, then go back to the disk one more time and make sure everything is flat and your joints are tight.
