This is one sweet knife. Family members won't be getting digs on this one. I really like the shape of the handle. The blade grind is so thin and even,... wicked sharp. This is a perfect example of what a pocket knife should be IMHO. Thanks for making it possible maddog 2020.

Marty/V-1,

Glad you like it.

You are going to have to BUY a Calypso JR LTWT in VG-10 PLAIN blade next time......LOL. I used that baby until the LTWT came out. It had been gathering dust and needed to be used.

IMHO, the now discontinued Calypso JR had the SWEETEST action out of ALL the Spyderco's I have ever tried, and owned. It is a shame it was available righthanded.

Sal, may be down the road Spyderco can bring back the Calypso JR w/ maroon micarta, and VG-10 blade.

I can always DREAM can't I....LOL. It never hurts to ask.

Some people have suggested that the Al Mar ultralights are made by the same group that made the micarta Calypso Jr.; anyone know if this is true?

Ray-md2020,

Your right, I am going to have to buy a Calypso JR LTWT in VG-10 but it's going to be for my brother-in-law. He's a good guy who doesn't have a decent knife and the 3" blade should keep him legal. I have to start looking around to try to find one, I've only even seen a picture once. It has became a permanent fixture in my pocket.

Thanks again,

V-1/Marty

If that is true Al Mar lgwts must be pretty smooth.

The Spyderco knives with polished black micarta handles have a lot of construction features in common with the Al Mar Ultralights - pins, pivot, first rate fit and finish. I'll be dollars to donuts it's the same factory, and I'm guessing that it's Moki - versatile outfit, making very good knives for a lot of OEM customers, and even some gems under their own name.

I'm with James about Moki being the source for the Calypso family with the black micarta handles. Moki markets the Al Mar featherweights under their name in Japan. The construction similarities between the two knives are too great to be coincidences. They also make the AG Russell Jess Horn model with the micarta handle scales, not to mention the C27 Jess Horn model.

Them:"What's that clipped to your pocket, a beeper?"
Me:"Uuh....yeah, something like that."

What a great knife. Mine is used as a money clip. The action is as smooth as any lock back I have ever handled. This knife just has class. Too bad about it being discontinued. It will probably last me a life time riding around in my right front pocket. It sets low enough that the military clipped to the pocket does not hit or rub.

What? Another knife? Don't you have enough of those things already?
How many does one person need?
And just what are you going to do with this one that you can't do with the others?
What is the purpose of all these knives anyhow??

This is one of my favorite Spydees of all time. Classy, well built, nice size and ergonomics. I like it so much that I've proudly given them as gifts, and all were very well received. I'm thinking of giving one of the new lightweights a test drive as a partner to my Sebenza, hopefully within the next couple of weeks.

I'm still waiting for the burgundy handled lightweight model to come out

Sal, any word on whether this will pan out? I know, I know, SKU Hell

For me the micarta calypso jr is a much classier knife than its lightweight brother. I just don't like zytel handles that much. AUS-8 can take a very good edge even if it won't hold it as long as other steels. I like the Al Mar Falcon which is the closest in blade length to the Calypso, but it is a much lighter knife with a thinner blade. Still its well made just not as good for heavier type cutting jobs.

I have a Calypso and a Calypso Jr. I love them both. Both are very classy, light and very high quality. I'm sorry they are discontinued. Sal, were these not selling? That seems unlikely.
