Micarta Care

This has been talked about over and over again but as we all know things change. The pic Jerry posted made me think of what to use for Micarta care. The TM NO looks like the micarta has a fresh coat of oil and the TM BM looks as if it is natural.

Has anyone changed what they use for Micarta care?

first i wash it in very hot tap water and liquid dish soap, scrubbed with a brush. after drying it will look as it was just machined, brand new.

i let the natural oils from my hands and beer stain it and darken it, sometimes they get a little jergins hand lotion on them

the best is to leave them raw but if you feel the need to apply anything then give it a douching with wd-40.

if you don't like what you see them soap and hot water will fix that.

I found that Eezox on the handle darkens it nicely like oil, but it does *not* dry out like WD-40 or Militec will.

No, I have not changed what I use for Micarta care. I use a mixture of sweat, mud, assorted juices from MRE entrees, tree sap, and CLP. These go on at regular intervals, in varying amounts, and different proportions. :D  :p

Actually seing this post reminds me that the handles on my CGNO are actually Grey Micarta not Black I think, I've never cleaned the Micarta, just wiped the blade off occasionally :D

Micartas should be kept in a large cage with lots of air and branches for exercise!
They should have access to food and water at all times and the opportunity to take a bath in hot water and dishsoap to clean off grease and so.
If kept inside, they can be quite dusty when fondled and tend to attract sharp pieces of steel in a peculiar way!

Don't mind me......I'm just slightly drunk.....again! :D

WOW!! I just tried that with my SHBA. I didn't know there was a pattern underneath! Perhaps I'll wash it once in awhile. Bourbon stains it a nice 'darker' also. Wow, it almost looks like a 'Blade Art' photo now. Oh well, back in the sweat sheath, can't let it feel too special. LOL

I do wash my knives but never treat the micarta with anything, :D
One thing I have noticed with my AD that I have with me every day of my life is the micarta has become very shiny, to the point of becoming slippery.

I normally have it in a kydex sheath in the front of my jeans, I’ve recently noticed a small fracture in the kydex where its wrapped around the start of the handle, has anyone had kydex become brittle?

Here’s a picture of it:

who's leather sheath is that and what is the model called, is that one of leathermans creations?

G’day Scott,
Yep that’s one of Dwayne’s BAD ASS’s, it gets a fair bit of use as well.:D
Ian.

that's a cool set up and a nice pic. i just might have to send my knfe and that pic to him and see if he can make one more like it!

Hey Ian

I've got a MS whose handles got like that. When they get that laquered (not liquored) up about the only thing to do is a bead blast to get the 'grippy' back. They get so slippery they ARE dangerous.

Nice rig. Dwayne really hit a home run with that design didn't he?

I can't believe the pattern in my SHBA grips! Guess I ought to wash them more than once a year. Been so long I just thought they were a solid dark brown/black.

Is it only paper micarta that becomes smooth/slippery?

I’m not too sure what is in the handles, its one of the early AD’s with the snakeskin handles.

I don’t think its paper micarta though??
Ian.

Ian,

I've got a sub hilt fighter with paper micarta handles. Without the sub hilt it would be like holding on to glass.
