Micarta care?

I fear this a silly question - but I've never had a micarta handled knife before. While there is much discussion on caring for your steel, is there anything necessary or recommend for handle upkeep?

Or is it just use 'em and don't give it a second thought?

*Got my first RAT(RC-5 OD) today...there is no small tree...or (small animal come hunting season) in my backyard currently safe!!:D

don't need to do anything with micarta. If you put oil on it though, it will darken until it dries up:)

yup micarta's designed to be torn up, beaten up, scorched, soaked and dropped, still look pretty and keep on kickin.

if i use a micarta for food prep i make sure to wash it w/ soap and water. the micarta will absorb the "juices" from the food you're cutting.

It doesn't really need anything. Although, I do like the look of oiled Micarta but it is purely aesthetic. If you want to see how it looks, you can rub the handles with Mineral Oil. If you don't like the way they look you can remove the oil with a little soap and water.

Having pored over all the RAT pics here and elsewhere, I find I like the natural micarta, but lean toward that lived-in, darker "oiled" look myself - thanks:thumbup:

Another micarta question..

I see where the micarta enters the kydex its getting darker.... No worries of cours, but for those of you that have had a rat for a long time... does that pose any threat of degrading the micarta through friction?

I understand that's how the knife stays in the sheath... Im just curious.

I got my RC4 to use... period, so some staining and discoloring is cool. But worried about that abbrasion. (I keep that "retention" screw tight...) I like a good solid SNAP when the RC4 is in its home.

Just use them. The slabs will remain fine after repeated use & sheathing, no worries. My Rats have a dark oily look to the handle slabs. If you use them they get dirty, nothing to worry about. Once in a great while I use windex to wipe them down and they look new. The next time I use it, the darkening process begins again. The linen or canvas in the micarta itself may absorb some liquids to a certain extent, but it dries out eventually. Use em!
