Don't know if this is the proper sub forum but seemed best. I have a knife coming with micarta scales. I carry all my knives. It has the stock g10 scales as well. So my question is do I have to worry about the micarta getting worn out or being fragile? Would I be better off putting the g10 back on and just changing the scales when I want it to be a little more sophisticated?

Without knowing whether it's homemade or not in general micarta is very tough stuff.

Micarta is plenty tough. I have it on several knives with no issues. I also made a slingshot a few years back out of a piece of 1/4" thick "linen" Micarta. It sustained several fork hits (where your shot alignment is a bit off and the ammo hits the frame) with 3/8" steel balls before finally de-laminating near the middle. Considering knife scales are backed up by steel, they should be pretty near indestructible. To expand a bit on rycen's comment, there would be a lot more variation if it's somebody's "homebrew" stuff. Factory made stuff is fine, though.

edit: Found some old pics of the beast! :D
