For those who have actually done it or have first-hand knowledge, are any of you aware of any instance where throwing a Busse caused damage to the micarta/G10? I am talking about throwing the knife at wood only with soft dirt below, and throwing only one knife, not one after another.

Let's hear the skinny on this topic.

you can mark up the micarta/g-10 with a bad throw. I have had a wood handle stand up to literally 10,000s of throws. I used it for decades. That handle is still on. If soft wood can take that, then Micarta or g-10 should hold up fine. I have not had enough bad throws on my BM to say it won't break, but seems sturdy to me. Micarta has a very high tensile strength and torsion strength. There are some very small marks on the micarta after a few bad throws. With enough bad throws I bet you could ugly it up a bit.

i've never had any problems in that scenario. although i have gotten some tree sap in the micarta which i've failed to remove . . . .
however, throwing with rocks and gravel near by i've chipped some g10 and it left some sharp edges.

ony of my original SHBM's which I threw for nearly 9 years and in the first 6 years I probably threw that thing into wood several thousand times a year and you could not tell I had thrown it at all. Even when it would hit butt first. So not even the vibrations broke it loose. But it may have hit micarta rarely anyway. G10 is harder and more brittle than canvas/linen micarta. So it is more impervious to chemicals and liquids but may not be as tough even though they tout it as being very tough. Paper micarta of course is the least tough.

Never had troubles with the micarta. I've never thrown a g10 knife.

Here's a short clip of me throwing a SFNO with magnum micarta scales. (and believe me there were numerous times it went wrong; where the handles hit the tree first but no damage was done whatsoever...)

Thanks for the info and vids, folks. That's exactly what I was loking for.

IIRC, Jerry reco's AGAINST it. I'm sure there's someone here who blew out their handles. But I seem to recall this discussion last year.

I stink at it, so I'm AOK. LOL

I've never had a problem with it but what Dennis said. I think there was someone (Clark Kent, the Hulk perhaps?) with a hell razor last year who managed some fierce uber-throw that bent the tip and shattered one of the scales into chunks of micarta.

chriss you dissapoint me, you can do searches and if you had you would have found this:D

And just so I don't let Kitched Aid POS feel left out, here is some more:

OMG...you're killin' me here. :p First, I was aware of, and had seen, all of those videos on more than one occasion. Second, I did search reading through threads (even one from Peter La--remember him???) where people talked about throwing, but not damaging Busses. In my mind, though, most everything seemed to focus on the INFI, not on the micarta and G10. Yes, I know you've thrown your SHBM more often than there are people in the town where I live. Still, I don't think anybody with the credentials (read as "experience") has ever come right out and said directly that micarta/G10 on a knife will or will not hold up to repeated throwing against wood and falling on grass, sand or soft dirt. That is what I was going for.

Now if I can only find a chunk of wood that size here in the Sonora Desert. :(

i damaged the micarta scales on my daba throwing it at trees. of course it could have been damaged by hitting something harder when i missed.

the scale got bent at the top rivet, to about 15 degrees away from the metal.

i didnt save pics, and its already been repaired.

I have chipped micarta before but not on a busse, so it is possible. but it is so cheap that who cares:D you have full tang anyway:D
