Micarta Handle Question

how do u get a good polish out of black paper micarta after sanding it. it just looks almost brown. what am i doing wrong?

I think the brown color can come from overheating or not using a high enough grit to bring out the color. Buffing with black compound at the end of sanding also helps.

I also think it depends on who made the micarta, some resins have a green/brown color that can be hard to get past.

I just came inside from shaping black/ red g10 scales and had the exact same question. Not to hijack your thread but I was finishing the ends ends near the riasso before glueing I sanded to 1500 but I could still see litttle fibers between the layers. Then I hit it with my dremel buffing wheel with red compound. And I burnt.it. :( how does everyone else finish micarta/g10 handles?

I agree! A green/yellow/brown color is indicative of burnt Micarta. On linen and paper sharp/new belts are a must. I go out to 800 and do zero buffing and get a true black color.

Sand with a lamp oil or kerosene. Will keep the dust moving and then you can see the areas that need the work.

I find that using Flitz plastic polish gives polyester and micarta extra shine.

I dry sanded black paper Micarta to 2000 grit and buffed with white rouge and it turned out just fine. It only took a gentle touch on the buffer to bring out the shine after sanding to 2000 grit.
