Micarta Handles for Becker Bk2?

Ok, Ive heard a lot of people have been having trouble putting micarta handles on the Becker Bk2 knife. But apparently on other becker knives the handles work well.

Here are my questions:

1.) Are the micarta handles better than the current grivory handles?

2.) Is the main problem with the BK2 micarta handles is that the screws are too short? If so, what type of screws do you need? Can you order the right screw size/length from Kabar?

0) where have you been hearing problems?

1) yes. no.

2) i can't speak to length, but the're fairly ordinary sized screws...

''''''The Fasteners for the BK-2, 3, 7, 77, 9 are Socket Head Cap screws #10-24 x 5/8" L.'''

since the BK2 is thicker than the rest, on some micarta, there might be a slight tolerance issue. just get slightly longer hardware. most hardware stores should have it. you can even buy higher grade stainless if you want. total cost should be like $1 or so?

oh yea thats why the BK2 is thicker than other becker knives so the screws come up short.

I've seen a few video reviews of users getting the micarta handles and saying the screws come up short. Also have seen comments of people that have had to hammer the screws in. but id prefer to get screws with better length.

if you put the nuts into the scales, and then put the slabs together, with no knife, and then tightne things down good, to seat the nut esp, THEN put them on the BK2, that would probably be more effective.

once those nuts seat, they're pretty much in there for good. they'll be WELL seated.

after that, and everything fits, a dab of loctite and well, Ethan's your uncle

I never had any trouble with the screws being too short. Got my scales mounted in about a minute or so...?!?

Weird. Sorry you're having trouble with yours...

Can't speak for the bk2, though the nuts were really tight going into the micarta. I wound up lining the nut up, putting a screw through the handle slab buy itself and tightening it down all the way. Repeat for the other two and put everything together.

As for getting them out...:D

I like the micarta a lot better than the grivory, though after messing around with my bk7 with the grivory instead of the micarta it isn't a huge difference. Will have to see how it goes, may wind up with another set of micarta handles. Personal preference mostly I'd imagine.

Yup, I had the new micarta slabs on my BK-2 lickety split. I just had to tap the original bk-2 factory nuts down into the micarta recesses first as it's a snug fit, which is good.

Stainless hardware would be a nice touch.

CRKS used to have some. You could check there. It's probably available online via a specialty hardware store too. I've found all manner of odd hardware with Google searches. The key is knowing the proper name. I've seen the Becker hardware called Socket Head Screws, Socket Cap Screws, or just Socket Screws. See, for example, this site:

I am totally blanking on the screw size, however. I used to know it. I could probably find out with a quick trip to my local hardware store, or maybe someone here knows it.

Ah, from Wikipedia...

Socket cap screw
Also known as a socket head cap screw, socket screw or Allen bolt, this is a type of cap screw with a hexagonal recessed drive. The most common types in use have a cylindrical head whose diameter is nominally 1.5 times (1960 series design) that of the screw shank (major) diameter. Counterbored holes in parts allow the screw head to be flush with the surface or recessed. Other head designs include button head and flat head, the latter designed to be seated into countersunk holes. A hex key (sometimes referred to as an Allen wrench or Allen key) or hex driver is required to tighten or loosen a socket screw. Socket screws are commonly used in assemblies that do not provide sufficient clearance for a conventional wrench or socket.
