Micarta Handles Removable?

Hey guys

Are the micarta handles and pins on the RC-4 removable? I was thinking of taking them off and testing a 550 cord wrap around the tang.

What do you guys think?

Cheers

I would either stick with the stock scales or modify the scales. I wouldn't do a paracord wrap on these. Usually I won't do a paracord wrap unless I don't have scales. In my opinion, it isn't near as comfortable and creates hot spots if you're using it a lot in a short period of time. For example, if you're doing some serious woodwork and carving, you'll notice within about 40 minutes blisters developing. Stick with the scales.

I think Micarta's not only better looking and more functional than 550 cord, but it's also more comfortable. but that's just my opinion.

I took my RC-4s off. There was some red locktite on the screws. I didn't like it when I wrapped it either.

Thanks for the help guys. I guess I better just keep the scales on. The only reason I asked it because some people enjoy having a place to keep upwards of 50 inches of paracord. I just figured that having a handle design like a Strider would be a useful tactic in a survival situation.

Thanks again

Good idea. Get an Izula as backup and wrap that:D

wrap the sheath with paracord and leave the wrap or scales on. A knife held by the naked tang is uncomfortable(more so in snow) and a little dangerous with slippage and twisting under heavy use. Plus you spent all that time wrapping. I would keep the micarta.

DRod and anyon else that took the handles off of their RC knives--Can you post a picture just for curiousity sake? I'd be curious to see.

Not much to see really. It just solid colored like the blade with a serial number laser engraved. I guess I could next time I tear it down a clean it. Probably sometime next weekend.

I just took mine off (RC-3,4) with two 3/32" allens, is that the right size? No metric size seemed to fit as well.

the first thing I did after receiving my RC 4 was to pull the scales off and give the knife a solid coating of CLP. The scales are easy to remove and put back on - just need a pair of small imperial allens (i think they're 3/32").
