I was hoping to try my hand at making some Micarta. A friend wants denim micarta handles in his knife.I read a tutorial awhile back, what I can not remember was where/what kinda resin/hardener was used. Can I just get some garden variety fiberglass resin? Is there a better product to use.
(I have gotten a cartridge style respirator recently)

I did read his tutorial before, but he only states he uses either polyester or epoxy resin. That means little to me at this point. I guess the are all pretty much the same?!?

They are not the same in strength, toughness, water resistance, and chemical resistance. As a rule you will get better results form epoxy. Even saying that there can be huge differences in epoxy when it comes to how they resist things like solvents, acid and gas/oil products. Kinda depends on what you are looking for in a end product and what you can get your hand s on to use. The polyester resins do not have the strength of the epoxy and absorbes much more water but, it is cheap and easy to find and use. Overall I recommend going with epoxy if you can but the polyestar if a good way to start out and see if you like making micarta.

Envirotex Lite
this is what i have been using and it does seem strong not G10 strong but good no less (in a folder i wouldnt use it with out linners)
i plan on tring a few different types to see what i like
