I was researching Micarta because I realised I didn't really know what it is. I found that Wikiwossname says:

"Micarta is a trademark of Norplex-Micarta Industrial Composites."

This is them

http://www.norplex-micarta.com/

BFers use the term Micarta quite frequently in a number of contexts. Is there a risk of any legal issues? David

There's no real problem with individuals using a brand name generally. If businesses use it for their own similar materials, that's different.

Norplex-Micarta Industrial Composites has the option of notifying anyone they feel is infringing their rights. A.G.Russell uses the term Rucarta.

The same situation obtains with Zytel, also known generically as FRN, fiberglass reinforced nylon.

It was originally introduced by Westinghouse as an electrical insulator, and was adopted by many knife makers due to it's durability. The term "micarta" has since become a generic name. I agree with Esav, use it generically and you're OK. Check it out in Wikipedia if you'd like to know more about it.

Yes, the original Westinghouse micarta is in high demand for handgun stocks....has a nice aged look. I have a couple of Gene Ingram knives in antique linen micarta that are very nice.
