Hey folks, I'm in my first post here at Becker forum. I am about to spend at least $50 to upgrade my stripped BK2 and wanted to get your opinion on where does this money should be spent - a new micarta handle or a nice leather sheath?

Thanks B-heads! :D

Ohh. That's tough. Depends. What kind of "good" leather sheath can you get for $50? I don't know of many for that much. Micarta might be the way to go, if you can find it.

Sheath man. The Micarta looks cool and is nice, but the griv. is pretty damn good and the sheath sucks on the 2.

Neither. Put a ranger band(bike inner tube) on the grip if you need it, modify the sheath yourself (get a Tech Lok) for $10, and with the remaining $40, get a BK11 or BK14.

Where the money "should" be spent is up to you. Do you not like the grivory ? Myself
I thought it was fine. I'm just a little ADHD and needed to rip mine apart and spend hours and hours making custom teak handles, running back and forth the hardward store for the exact size hardware, (stainless of course) more time tracking down sealers, more time and money. More time and money ... ARRRRRGGGG ! Make it stop !

Now ... it's Puuuurfect. (LOL)

Serious - up to you. Micarta and custom leather does look nice though. Hmmmmmmmm

No not again !

Think if you're going for looks or function. The sheath won't change the look of the knife but will of the overall package. The scales will change the look of the knife and the overall package. Which do you dislike the most? Which is the least functional?
You know you can get scales for less than $50. Can you get a nice leather sheath for $50?
Shop around and look at pictures of other setups, there are many. That's part of the fun.:)

Save a few more bucks and get that good leather sheath. Don't have to look too far on here to find one. Grivory's are outstanding if you give them a chance and like the man said above, ranger band 'em if you want.

I say go for micarta, the only good $50 leather sheath you will find is one you make yourself.

I would say micarta handles...

I like the sheath the BK2 comes in, I think its damn impressive kydex work IMO

I like how micarta looks but love the way the grivory feels and works - far superior, IMO. I'd be up for a nice leather sheath though.

I like grivory, I like micarta, I kinda like the factory sheath, but I like others better.

For the total package, get a sheath that will work for your needs. Do you want a knife kit? Just a sheath?

For a performance upgrade, get you some micarta. It dresses the knife up nice, gives you more grip (maybe), and absorbs shock better than grivory.

That said, here's what I would do, mod the factory sheath by filing the inside with a mill file, so the edge won't drag and drill out the rivet closest to the top of the sheath. Either go with that, or get you a Tekloc, leather, kydex or something to reinforce or change the belt loop. Leave the grivory alone, its perfect. If you find it too small, ranger band that bad boy.

Buy a BK11 or BK14.

Go custom instead of the common mass produced colors for your scales, there are a few here who make it

Welcome to the forum, glad you're here. Most leather sheaths in the knife market, range from $45 bare to $245 loaded. Depending on who is making them, the average price is around $70. Some make it cheaper, some use presses, stamps, dies, etc. Others do all hand worked, from cutout to sealing. I do the latter. All my sheaths are 100% handmade. All American materials, and organic, save for the stitching, I use waxed nylon.

Good to hear a man with your years of experience weighing in, would love to see some of your work.

Once again, welcome to the Becker forums and Bladeforums.

Thanks Moose. I think I am leaning on buying the BK14 now :D I just ordered the Tek-lok to beef-up my Kydex sheath. I forgot that I have a friend who runs a bike shop business. So, he dumped about 4 pairs (8) of spent bike rubber tires at my home last night when I ask him about it :D

snerk, gotta love friends in different places. I got guys that wanna donate cars to be chopped up, wood to be split, and right now, I'm trying to talk a guy out of a rather large beef cow, for, um, er, uh, some BKT hardcore testing, so to speak. We'll see what the future holds.

You owe me a coke and some cleaning supplies! I just sprayed all over my 'puter screen! LOL.

Can't wait for the field report on that test! HA!

Get the micarta.
I just do not understand the gripes on the factory sheath for the BK-2. It is one of the best sheaths I have on any of my knives.

The Grivory scales are good, too, but I prefer micarta if for nothing more than the looks.
