Micarta scales for BK2, are longer bolts needed?

So I want to get some micarta scales for the BK2, but I read another post about another knife brand and the guy was commenting on adding the scales then needing to find longer bolts.

He was a fan of another brand and was kind of putting down these knives, but not really slamming the brand. Regardless, I don't want to get the scales then need to go bolt hunting. I'd rather know up front.

Thanks in advance.

Stock hardware has worked fine for me every time I add micarta.

I read that post. I have upgraded all of my BKT's to micarta, and I have always used the stock hardware that came with the original knife..so to answer your question, nope. You are fine with what you have.

Cool, thank you. Did I fairly represent that member's comments?

and if ya did need new hardware it easy too find but ya don't so the other was an idiot I say!

Go bolt hunting anyway and put some stainless bolts and locknuts in there - costs a couple bucks at most and no rust. My 2¢.

I just bought stainless bolts for my BK2 at my local Do-It-Best hardware store. I think I had $2.70 total wrapped up in bolts and locknuts.

The only issue I had was that they only carried 1/2" and 3/4" long bolts so I had to grind 1/8" off to get the 5/8" needed.

Since I'm feeling lazy, can you PM me a source? Or is a local hardware store good enough?
Everyone else beat me to it, I get mine at an ACE hardware store near me....any place where they have the drawers of different stuff. I've also found them at the Orange place and the Blue place; a little more expensive, but still not that much.

The stock hardware will work, you've just got to work with it a little. The trick is the nuts have to be deep enough in their cutout. What I did was get a hammer and punch and seat them as deep as I could. Tap them down lightly. Once they're seated, they're not going anywhere. The screws should then thread right in. You can get some longer screws, but I've used this method several times with BK2's and the stock hardware and micarta scales. Hope this helps.

I just purchased the micarta handles from KA-BAR on 1/20/2014 and this problem does still exist. Here is a closeup of the grivory hadles with the factory bolt. Notice the bolt extending beyond the nut.

Here is a closeup of the bolt after I installed the micarta handles. Notice that the bolt does not extend beyond the nut nor is it flush.

Really disappointed that KA-BAR has still as of January 2014 not addressed this problem. Well, I am off to the hardware store to get some stainless!

Just added the stainless steel bolts. The aesthetics of the stainless really bothers me. Will have to remove, mask and paint them to get this blade back to being more tactical.

are the grips comfortable? They don't look as rounded as the OEM grips.

Haven't done any serious work for an extended time to determine if the grips are comfortable for me yet. 1st impression is that they do feel alot better than the grivory ones.
