Hey guys,

Happy New Year!

I just got my Becker Necker last week, and got the micarta scales for it. I love the look and feel of them. I've never held anything made out of micarta before and it's got a very unique feel. I'm curious if there's anything I need to do to maintain it, like wiping it down with oil or anything.

Here's a picture:

I just put the lanyard on it, my first time doing a diamond knot...took me quite a bit longer than it should have to figure it out.

Here it is again, this time with my graduation present to myself.

Anyways, thanks! Hopefully I can make time for some camping soon so I can put these guys to work along with my other knives.

I've got factory micarta on my afghan and there's nothing you really need to do to maintain it. Sanding it can change the color, or you can dye it if you want, but really it takes care of itself.

The micarta, because it is a cloth made material will develop a discoloration over time with use (usually darker). The oils from the hand and dirt will eventually manifest itself on the surface. Having said that, I believe its relatively low maintenance but I have limited experience with it. I only have one knife with micarta on it (a BK11) and I never use it. Perhaps others will chime in who have better information.

Great combo you got there. The micarta will naturally absorb oils from your hands and whatever else it comes into contact with and as a result will darken over time. I just let it do what it's gonna do and leave it stock.

You can sand it to a finer grit, which will make it less 'fuzzy', which will hold on to less dirt over time, but doing so will make it far less grippy.

Oiling the scales will darken them a bit and sometimes looks nice.
