A couple of years ago I had a micarta Calypso Jr that I later gave to my father-in-law as a gift, and I have been searching for another one every since.
Well, I was visiting a local knife store (The Knife Shop in Ft. Mill, SC) and I discovered two dicontinued Spyderco models: the micarta Calypso Jr (fully serrated) and the micarta Wayne Goddard Jr (1/2 serrated).
Both of these knives are simply beautiful and have a simple elegance that you don't see in many folders.
A few friends of mine believe that these micarta versions are the best small folders that Spyderco has ever produced--and I find it difficult to say otherwise, they are great knives.

I was also surprised to find that I actually prefer the Goddard Jr over the Calypso Jr. The Goddard just fits my hand better and I like the blade design better as well.
So I gave the Calypso Jr to my wife--it has replaced her Kershaw Rainbow Leek as her EDC.

What do you think of the micarta Spyderco models, and which is your favorite?

Happy hunting,
Allen.

I have both the Calypso Jr. & the Jess Horn in Micarta. They're both in the EDC rotation as users. When I was working briefly in industrial sales, we had a stone shop where we would teach seminars on our equipment. Both knives got fairly well scratched up, so I put them into the bead blast cabinet & voila- "Tactical" Micarta Spydies. :) The bead blast finish provises a somewhat better grip texture. I prefer G10/Micarta to FRN as a handle material- just "warmer" somehow.

I really like the micarta used by Spyderco, it just adds that additional touch of class that sets them apart from other models.

I have 3 Calypso's with micarta handles (Lrg-PE, Lrg-SE, Small-PE) and I think of them as the 3 classiest Spyderco's in my collection.
The burgendy micarta that Spyderco used on the limited run Jester was also amazing, it really glows a deep orange in bright sunlight.

I have at the moment JD Smith. It's nice handle an all, but somehow the clip point doesn't appeal to me as much as I thought it would. Perhaps the false edge is missing.

Two nice finds there Allen!

Guess you could say I like micarta, at the moment have a Shabaria, a JD Smith, a C34 Horn, and a brand new Persian, all in black micarta, a Baby Horn in white micarta, and two burgundy micarta Jesters. Picking a favorite is a bit harder, but as much as I am impressed by the Persian, I'll have to say I still favor the Baby Horn above the rest of them. Still trying to score a PE micarta Calypso Jr.

My favorite is one of my EDC knives. A Shabaria that has had the clip swapped from one end to the other(Great work done by SC_Rebel). I have a full size Calypso that I wish I could bring myself to carry. :)
Maybe someday.

The micarta Goddard Jr. is one of the best pocket-knives ever made, IMHO. I have had 2 and given each away after my heart strayed to a new knife . . . now I need to find #3 . . .
