Wanted to share a nice tale, Michael, aka ChefGet, sent a surprise that arrived today and it's one I've admired for a long time but never had the dollars at hand to pick up, but I had helped him out a while back and he sent this as a thank you, a tear welled up in my eye when I opened the zippered pouch and found this damascus bladed, ivory scaled liner lock wharncliffish beauty ;) I called him up asap and thanked him profusely and wanted...really I did, wanted to return this but he talked me out of it, I said I took a big magic marker and put his name on the otherside so I'd always remember where this folder came from, hehe but I didn't...this has a neat thumb opening device at the top of the handle, protrudes just enough to thumb the blade open. I am leaning heavily more towards a modified wharncliffish blade shape, as Michael says, an upswept wharncliff blade, an overall more useful shape in my opinion.

Thanks again Michael, knife is made by Van, don't know much more than that, Michael feel free to chime in with any details you have of the maker.
Blade is 2 1/4" long, handle is about 3 1/2" long.

A very neat and practical looking little knife.

I like that Damascus.

Thanks, sharpened up like a son of a gun too!

Here are a couple more pics taken of this folder;

The liners are Titanium and has a very cool looking back spacer, not exactly file worked but similar in effect

Here is a shot of her all closed up, great looking ivory on this!

Quite a gesture. Nice. Good for you.

I LOVE the shape. Can't wait to hear more about the maker. Thanks for the post.

Thanks Coop, I believe the maker is Van der Merwe but there are a couple guys with that name...Johan and Van Van der Merwe, strange with two Van's but that's what I dug up ;)

Images were taken using my Fuji S7000 and a single light above to the left, hand held shots as well, reduced to fit. Like PhilL I'm really gettin' into this digital stuff ;) Way cool on the quickness of image returns!

Gary,

That is a great little folder. Elegant and clean as a whistle... I still don't know why whistles are clean though. What a great gift:)

Aw shucks guys... :)

To be honest the good karma was earned by Gary, I was just trying to horn in on it. Gary was kind enough to ingrave my son's initials and name on his baseball glove (the world is baseball, isn't it?), gratis. Little Michael thinks it's the bomb; only kid on the block with this, you know.

Just knowing how good that act made Gary feel made me a wee bit jealous for the same, and off went a knife he had previously admired ("lemme see that small one again, would ya"). The least I could do IMHO.

Is there a better hobby than this...? :D

BTW I do believe it is Van VdM, from South Africa...acquired it from a gentleman who had just gotten back.

See you all at the Chesapeake show in Dec!

Thanks Nathan, it is a lovely knife but I do use it, mostly so far to slice up leather and open a couple boxes, I expect it's the most work it's seen in it's entire life ;) Sharp knife.

And the photos, love the digital camera! what a great innovation! :)

great photos and neat idea of how to open it with the thumb

Thanks kcardwel, the Fuji S7000 is working great, love the digital world ;)

That thumb opening works pretty slick as well, the screws on there are a bit small, I think they are a T5 which is tough to find!
