Hi,

Could anyone tell me something about a maker by the name of Michael Veit? I've mostly seen his stuff in the Point of Interest books. He seems (seemed?) to favor bowies on fancy stag. The stag handle typically tapers to a fairly massive double-guard, and there's also a butt plate and a fancy tang nut. The fittings and sometimes the blades are often blued. Nice stuff!

Hi Joss,

He was working with Jerry Rados for awhile.

Beautiful work, killer guardless fighters, stunning.

I met him at the Guild show in the early 90's. I walked up to his table looked at a knife and asked how much was the knife.

His reply "what are you asking for, you can't afford it". He was 100% correct, he didn't even tell me the price and I knew I couldn't "afford" it.

Now a guy with those sales skills, you know he went far. :D

I wonder what happened to him???

Lack of people and sales skills aside. He made beautiful knives a decade ago.

Thanks Les - you're a gold mine.

Geez, I wonder what those guys think they are... I heard something similar about Loveless. And then you meet people like Don Fogg (and I guess Mr. Moran, whom I've never met), who are unbelievably humble. I wonder if it has anything to do with how eager people are to learn - try new stuff, new designs, new metals, whatever - vs. feel they've "arrived".

Still, gorgeous bowies in Point of Interest - stunning, trully.

Thanks again,

JD

This is Michael Veit. I just happened on to this thread and must say I am upset with the response from Mr. Robertson. I have not attended a guild show since 1988. I don't know Mr. Robertson, and for the life of me I would never say that to anyone. I am a part time maker and have customers all over the world. Last count 25 countries. In fact one of my favorite sayings after attending many shows, was that you never judge anyone by the way they look and act especially at a knife show. Anyone who knows me can affirm what I have said here. Its just something that would never have happened and it is a lie.

Fun to have some of those old threads resurrected.

Since I get a chance - congrats on your work. Based on the (very few) pictures of your knives, you have an eye for killer designs & great quality of work.

We would love to see some more of your work. If you are in the mood to share with us, please post some pictures (or you can email me the pics and I'll post them for you).

Any chance that Les could have mistaken you for someone else? He is many things, and a salesman....but I have never known Les Robertson to outright lie in the over 10 years that I have known him.

Be that as it may....WHAT exactly have you been doing for the last 6 or so years since this thread got started?...can't find current pix of your work anywhere...and would love to see it.

Welcome to BladeForums!

I stand corrected it was in the late 80's not early 90's.

Damascus Guardless fighter, with I believe either a blued guard (possible some engraving) and a Elephant Ivory handle.

You will have to excuse the fact I don't have an exact recollection of the knife. After all it was at the Guild Show in 1988. However, it does stand out in my mind as I couldn't believe someone would say that. I realize that I was a new dealer and established makers had little or nothing good to say to me.

Several knife makers were using that "sales approach" in the late 80's. To his credit he did find me later at the show and apologized for his comment. It does not come as a surprise to me he doesn't remember. To be fair I couldn't pick out Michael in a lineup.

Like I said before, he made very nice knives.

i for one would love to see some pics if anybody has any.....i don't know anything about michael and it sounds like he makes some cool stuff......ryan

I love his knives. I LIKE blued damascus and fittings. He was known for super tight Turkish in a Rados style, but sleeker, more modern design, IMO.

Michael, I recall your very nice folders from the early 90s. Nice work, Man! Had wondered what happened to you until I found out you sold two power hammers to a friend of mine. You back to making knives?

Really Kohai???

Seems like there was an awfully adament WoodWorkGhost that swore he wasn't someone else.

Interesting. :p

Now yer bein' cute, and it doesn't become you.

You know the why, and the how......Les did his time in purgatory...it is a hard time for a man that cannot claim his name in decent company.....if you might take a contrary position from time to time....you MIGHT understand.

But you don't and won't because you were raised with manners and love instead of venom and spite.

Not to mention that there is a bit of bad blood between youse two.

I was recently able to meet Mike and handle a few of his knives. I have to say they were exceptional. One was a Turkish Twist folder with gold inlay etc. Im not really into folders, but have seen a few, and this one ranks up there with the best ive seen for fit/finish/materials used/execution etc.

The other was a big Bowie/Fighter, im guessing about a 10" blade, with stag handle, fittings and blade were hot blued. Again, fit/finish/execution were spot on, very nice Bowie, tried to talk him out of it but all i got was a chuckle.

I would have gotten photos, but it was about 10 degrees with a 30 mph wind and we were outside at 6 am loading equipment!
