I recieved my copy of Blade [ May 2005 ] last Fri. While taking a first look, my
eye was drawn to Michelangelo's name atop an ad for Mr. Ed Fowler. Now I do not know Mr. Fowler personally, I only know him by reputation, which is larger than life and of considerable merit. I am aware of Michelangelo's work
and have seen pieces of his art up close. Amazing! nuff said.
It seems foolish, to me, to portray yourself as the Michelangelo of bladsmiths. Where can you go from there? Maybe a deity.
No sour grapes here, just a reality check.
Fred

I can see this one getting moved to "OT."

I saw that ad too and was pretty taken aback from it. I mean, I appreciate his great work and dedication to the industry -- but damn.

I thought comparing oneself to some old Italian painter is a cutdown. I compare myself more to Apollo or Zeus. Something a bit more deity like :) I've got the body of a greek god anyway :)

I though you were called Master Williams these days. D :D

Sorry Kit - I had to!! :D :D :D :D

I think the ad was meant to draw attention to the new teaching shop, not be so much a direct comparison. Notice, he describes himself in the ad as "Cowboy, writer, friend to all." I don't take the seriousness of the reference literally, except pointing out the opportunity young knifemakers have to take classes from him.

I also know from conversation, he has also found humor in people (unaware)calling the shop asking for Mr. Buonarroti... So, there is some fun in it. Remember that April Fools story he wrote about finding the Lewis and Clark knife, and tested it to destruction? (He can sneak one past you now and then.)

Mark,
Who told you that about your body? If you're the same guy I'm thinking of, you look more like an old tubby painter. (like most of us) ...Or, Ol' Dirty Santa. ;)

ouch.....being called a painter hits where it hurts.. :D

Maybe we should put Master Shiva and Ed in a ring together and see who comes out on top! :D

Such brutal honesty in a man has to be admired.

The reason for posting this thread was not to question someother makers
validity, it was to ask the question; how does the buying public see us? Are we a group of elitest, who proclaim ourselves great, or near that or are we people seeking, striving to do our very best with each new creation.
I've been working with young teenagers for the last ten years or so.
My advice to them is to be their own hero. Set there standards high and go for it. Don't follow, LEAD. Same advice to all knife makers.
I guess that is no doubt my five cents worth, Fred
A.K.A. the uwt, unknown with talent.

Mark, about that Zues comment, I'll have to take your word for it. :D

I've always taught my kids to never idolize anyone. You can admire someone for their successes in life, but to idolize someone for being more then they are is wrong because we all came on the earth the same way and we will all leave here the same. I haven't seen the ad in question, but I do admire Mr. Fowler for his achievements and what he has done for the custom knife world. He is a great knifemaker and writer.
