I was at a knife show today and picked up my first 2 bali's I got 2 Jag's, one the polished metal with the plastic "grips" over the holes. And the other the basic black handles with holes in them. I spent about 20 min inspecting all areas of the 2 knives, and they are in good shape, i got them both for 35 bucks, its a steal for a pair or good jags, though the tang pin on the one ive been using is making deep gouges in the back of the handle already, overall, im impressed. Anyway, i am in Michigan, and i dont know the the laws, i need someone who KNOWS for a fact the laws about balis:
Can i OWN one?
Can i POSSES(sp) one on my property?
Can i CARRY one?(i am sure this is a no)
If i have have one in my car(is it legal in the first place?) should it be in view?
thanks guys!

I don't know Michigan laws, but I can tell you if you have one in your car, it should NOT be in view. I never leave a knife in my car unless I have to, and when I do it sure as hell isn't in plain view of anyone that walks by. That's a good way to get your car broken into and your knife stolen.

I understand what you are saying, but here in MI if the blade is over 3 inches you must have it in plain sight of all persons around you, thus, not having a "concealed" weapon.

From what I recall, the public carry of any knife, except a hunting knife adapted and carried as such, is a felony in Michigan. This includes anywhere in your car (including the trunk - I know, I know - "How the heck am I supposed to get my new toys home?" Search me.) This is statutory law, but darned if I can remember the precise article & section. This may change (unlikely, but maybe) as I have heard that there may be a possibility for CCW's in MI's future. That is just a rumour, however.

I know there are plenty of knife/outdoors/hunting retail establishments that carry balisongs in MI, so that would lead me to believe that ownership/posession @ home is legal.

Well, there you go. But don't just take my word for it, check Bernard Levine's page on laws (the link to which I can't find at the moment), and anywhere else anyone here may be able to suggest.

An ye harm none, do as thou wilt.

MI's CCW law has passed and will become law this summer; I should be so lucky here in KS........

Something to remember is alot of judges base their decisions on case law as opposed to the way laws are actually written.

***case law=previous decisions in other cases

Thanks guys, a bali could and would be a good hunting knife, its just the damn rep these knives got. Oh well, better not carry it.
