I had a quick question on the GB/AR folders that ya'll make. I have an AR and I just worked a deal on a used GB. Let me first start of by saying that you guys make a really great product. I saw Micks recent post on the scout knives Strider is making. Apparently the goal of these knives is to reduce the overall weight. I was curious if there would be any way to reduce the weight of your current crop of folders- the GB and AR series. I thought that it might be possible to drill a series of holes in the TI liners, maybe not the locking side- but the opposite side- in an effort to reduce weight. Is this idea crazy? I know the liners are titanium, but I would imagine that if several holes, or even milling out a section, were done it would help reduce the overall weight of the knife. Is this something that Strider would be willing to do to an existing folder? Thanks in advance-Jason
 
I got some thoughts.

Seems like titanium is pretty light weight stuff to work with. Taking a few holes out may not make much of a difference.

I'm assuming the blade takes up majority of the knife weight. It is .165???" thick. And 4" long. But then again I have never held an AR/GB. Only a BS, which is pale in comparison.


Consider proportions of weight. If you benched 50 kilos and added 5 kilos to it, you'd certainly know a difference. But if you benched 100 kilos, then added 5 kilos, you probably still feel... well, something heavy.

Same idea might apply with an AR. Just because you took a little weight off the handle, doesn't necessarily mean it will feel lighter. Sure, it IS lighter, and every little bit counts; but maybe not enough for you to care, or for the strider guys to have to go to the work to milling it out. Also, it's possible that skeletonizing the handles like that might comprimise some of the handle's integrity.

If weight was a major concern, you could consider thinning out the blade, as it's steel and steel is heavy. And why the hell would you want to do that?

Midget, excellent thoughts. Lightening an AR/GB is like Dolly Parton getting a breast reduction...
