Mick or Duane: why even make a kerambit?

Hello Mick and Duane (and all of you reading this!) I was re-reading the knife fighting thread the other day and then this question popped into my head. Since the knife fighting thread advocated a psychotic succession of thrusts until your opponent is dead, dead, dead, why make a kerambit? From what I know of kerambits, they are small, concealable blades that are meant for slashes. Is it for plentitude and variety? Do you just like 'em? Is your design a thrusting blade too?

Thanks guys!

Oh, by the way, I am 1/4 of the way through "The Iliad" for the first time. From the descriptions given, I want a Strider Spear! Make it out of somethign a little better than bronze and I bet you could smite any bad guy out there!

Read Gates of Fire by Steven Pressfield. Then you'll want a Xiphos. Or, a darning needle. Better than the Illiad any day.

As to the Kerambit question, I'll hazard a semi-educated guess. Demand is out there for a Kerambit. Duane and Mick have been training recently with Steve Terani. Steve just happens to be a ketambit fan as he works in the Phillipino styles of martial arts. They figured why not make the best one out there. Two sets of smarts get together and good things happen.

Thanks Ryan for the guess :)

And thanks for the book suggestion, I'll add it to my reading list. I'll be reading "The Oddysey" after the Iliad. A friend of mine told me about a part in that book where Odysseus returns to his wife after being away for a looooong time. All of the guys tried seducing her, and they tried stringing Odysseus' bow, with no luck. Odysseus returns an "old man" but he re-strings the bow, much to the shock of the guys trying to get his wife! Thereafter follows a slaughter....

If "The Gates of Fire" is better than "The Iliad", then I'll be quite entertained :)

Gates of Fire is off the chart! Big thanks to Mick and DB for suggesting it to me. Pressfield has another recent book - I think it is the Last of the Amazons. Don't quote me...but it's close.

Right you are, Joe. I finished it a few weeks ago. Almost as good as the Gates. Gotta send it off to Duane now.

Knifebomber,

Sorry, and with all the respect, but that has got to be the worst literary comparison I have ever read...

Gates of fire was a great book.

But we are talking about "The Iliad".

There is no comparison.

Regarding the Kerambit:
We have been getting requests for a few years to make a Kerambit. We thought they were just another piece of martial arts weaponry that we were not interested in.

Then we met and watched the things that Mr. Steve was doing with the thing.

The thing is SO efficient that it is VERY scary.

Will I train with one and become proficient enough to carry it? More than likely no, I won’t have the time, but it is an Awesome tool.

I really didnt understand the Kerambit until I watched Steve Terani's video on it. In the hands of a trained guy like Steve it is anawesome weapon! Watch the Video and you will see what I mean.

Ill have to read them books, Ryan, I didnt know you could read! :D My latest is Blackfoot Lodge Tales. :)

Rob is lying. He's reading "Tails of the Blackfoot Lodge." Actually, it isn't a book, but rather a magazine. And you don't really read the articles, you just look at the pictures.

   :D

Knifebomber,

I am not disputing that it might very well be a good book; indeed, I've read some interesting reviews about it, but, as Mr. Strider points out, there simply is no comparison. At no time can one compare almost 3000 years old poetry of war to any contemporary work, it's like comparing appels and anvils. Still, perhaps I'll find the time to read it and be pleasently surprised nonetheless:).

Christiaan.
