Micro bevel strength vs. same angle w/o micro

I understand that a microbevel will make an edge stronger, but will the same angle be as strong without the microbevel.

Eg. Is a 15 dps primary theoretically given identical steels as strong as a 13 dps with a 15 dps micro bevel. Or vise versa.

Which is stronger or are they the same?

IF the geometry is the same outside of the angles the 15 primary taken to zero will be the strongest, but not the sharpest of the two.
Its all about geometry.

I think it depends on what you are doing with the knife and what you think the failure will be. If you are cutting something that puts lateral force on the edge you think will cause the edge to chip, I don't think the micro bevel makes as much difference. This is assuming the chips extend back into the blade significantly beyond the micro bevel. OTOH I've read some discussion about edge dulling through micro chipping in which case the micro bevel might help. Now if you are cutting against a hard surface, such as with a kitchen knife, it seems that the larger angle right at the edge would stand up better in which case a micro bevel might help. I think for most people the advantage of the micro bevel is that it makes the edge easier to touch up the sharpness.

Hi Fred.Rowe,
what are you saying exactly? and how did you figure it out?
This is what I think you're saying
15dps0dpsmb: 15 dps edge with 0 microbevel, strongest but not sharpest
15dps0dpsmb: 15 dps edge with +1 degree microbevel (16dps), sharpest but not strongest

with sharpest meaning shaves easier and strongest meaning takes less damage?

Ive found my scandi to be opposite of this...with a zero edge it's ridiculously sharp but more fragile..with a micro bevel it's more durable just not as sharp...

I think what Fred meant was if you sharpen an edge at 15 degrees without a microbevel, it will be stronger than an edge sharpened with a 13 degree edge with a 15 degree microbevel. Strongest meaning takes less damage, and sharpest meaning cuts a little easier. Hair shaving, as in arm hair, doesn't really depend on the edge angle to be possible. Anything from 7 degrees to 25 degrees will shave your arm. With such small angle changes as 2-3 degrees, it would be very difficult to tell a difference between them in cutting, particularly in arm shaving.
