micro bevel

The initial bevel angles on production knives tend to vary significantly from the factory specs which are usually 15-25 degrees per side. The only way to know on a individual knife is to actually measure it.

There is usually no microbevel from factory knives. I was able to sharpen my Twitch II at 15 degrees per side.

Many factory knives have micro-bevels due to buffers, or possibly just finer belt finishes.

There was a micro bevel on my ZDP-189 Ti Leek from Kershaw. Right out of the box, I was looking at the edge and noticed a very fine thin line at the edge of the blade, quite separate from the primary bevel. This was probably to remove any burr that occured when putting the narrow grind on this steel. It did seem to reduce the sharpness to just-shy-of-hair-scraping sharp. Oh, well. At least it will hold that edge forever.

I took a better look at the bevel and could see that it has a convexed micro-bevel. I decided to take a chance and try the 16 degree angle sharpener and it came right up to razor sharp.
