micro- chipping on a brand new blade?

just ordered a spyderco endura 4 with the emerson wave feature off of amazon for $70, it said it was new yet there are fairly noticeable micro chips on it fresh out of the packaging... :thumbdn: should i return it or break out the sharpening kit?

VG-10 is not likely to chip, just not one of its normal modes of failure. It will however dent, roll, and deform, this is a likable feature because it means the steel is malleable and can be "steeled" back to sharp with a ceramic rod or sharpening steel. If a steel is likely to chip the just mentioned methods of repair would damage such a steel in the form of chips.

That said..... Just sharpen it.

It's also been my experience with factory edges, that they seem to be "weaker" than the fresh steel under it. One explanation I have heard is that the HT on the very edge may have been affected by the speed with which they were sharpened at the factory.

Sharpening brings the fresh steel to the surface and often solves the "rotten steel" problem.

Absolutely !! That's why I often suggest that the makers here go slow on grinding especially the last parts. Tips are even more of a problem -they often just break off !! Heat can easily temper the steel and even reharden it !

Glad to hear this confirmed. I had heard it mentioned that it isn't uncommon for factory knives to come with a burnt edge. And that if you were to do edge retention tests. It would be good to sharpen it several times before doing so in case it was burnt.

The edge is likely dented or rolled.
I've never gotten a knife with chips before.

I've also ordered several knives from Amazon and have never had an issue. They're a good supplier and I buy from them often.

I would say just sharpen it to get that fresh steel on the edge.

Good luck. =]

Hard to say what the knife is with no pictures. Could be a used knife someone decided to return for all anyone knows. I've read about some really bizarre stuff happening through them with knives, enough to make me a loyal customer to just a few shops across the board. The big river store isn't one, for knives anyway.

Amazon lists if the product is new or used. There are 3rd party sellers but either way amazon has the easiest return policy online. I've never had an issue returning things. It's about as easy as returning things at walmart or easier and I've never paid for return shipping and I have always been credited for initial shipping too.

That being said I buy from dealers on here for all my traditionals.

To the op, just sharpen it.

i actually just got a endura 4 lightweight with the same issue, i ordered 2, one came in just fine and the other had 2 small chips on the blade, did your box have a piece of scotch tape holding it closed instead of the circle sticker?

btw im just gonna sharpen it

I play with em, test the factory edge out, dull it then give it nice long sharpening or re-profiling if need be. So I end up doing the edge at most 2 days after I've had it, with the exception of my PM2 and I just got a Kershaw Chill, and I'm quite happy with the factory edges that came on them. I've since thinned out the edge on my PM2 though and it slices like a dream.

As for OP: I would just sharpen it and put your own edge on it. IMO it'd be easier than sending it to the factory and have a possibility of messing with the blades heat treat.

I've bought alot of knives from Amazon and I haven't had an issue. Including my Pioneer....
Ill remember this next time some x-tra knife cash comes my way.

I don't know if it's because I'm just not that great at sharpening, but there is no way I'd keep it.

I personally love a new knife with a good factory edge (like what Spydercos ship with) and wouldn't feel like it is new (which is what you paid for) if I, or anyone else had to fix a damaged edge straight away.

No way man. Pack that sucker up and get what you paid for. I don't know about you, but I work very hard for my money. I expect others work just as hard for theirs.
