Hello all,

I finally walked into my local B&M shop and had the opportunity to play with the newest mini-knives by CRKT, the Dogfish and a Folt's Minimalist. I have to say I was actually quite impressed. I wound up buying a Dogfish as well as a Folt's Bowie style blade and Tanto. They didn't have the Sheepsfoot in stock or I'd have purchased the whole line. In any event, these are surprisingly great small knives, at a very good price point. For those of you that prefer to buy strictly American, let me note here that they do say "made in china" on them. That was a surprise I didn't get until I got the knives home and unwrapped. That being said, the fit and finish is very good. I really like the relatively fat micarta handles and the blades are more robust than I would have expected. I have used them to whittle, slice cheese and peel apples and they handled all three chores quite well. I do not hunt, but my boss does and when I showed him the knives the first thought he had was that they would make good skinners for small game. I haven't conducted empirical studies, but I'll take his word for it. By no means are these massive survival knives, but they are great for EDC carry, as the blades are short enough to be legal in almost all states and would make great backup knives for a b.o.b or small survival kit. One word of caution, the bottle opener on the Dogfish works great, but if you have large hands like me, one must be careful not to open a finger at the same time due to the design of the sharp end of the knife.

While I havent tried the Folts, I have carried the Dogfish for several years (odd and on). I agree that is a good EDC due to size, but be aware that the sheath will "loosen up " to make neck carry hazardous pretty quickly. Anybody tried to fix this problem?

I don't know about when the knives first came out, but now they come with a little belt clip attachment that the user can attach which allows the knife to be carried "scout" style. That's my solution, as I've never been a big fan of neck knives. Plus given that the screws pass through holes in the sheath it helps draw the kydex in a little tighter.

Relatively easy fix, actually. Heat up the sheath with a heat gun (or in a toaster oven) until it's soft, stick the knife in, and press it between a couple of layers of paper towel underneath a book and your weight for 45 seconds or so. This will re-mold the kydex and tighten up the retention again.

Good review.

I have long thought that the Folts Minimalist is probably the best neck/small knife design around.
