Hello I am looking at dropping some money on a microtech, or two. I am really interested in the ADO fixed blade, and the combat troodon, preferably tanto with some serrations. has anyone used these knives?

I have. :-)

I have handled the tanto and double edge ADO. Black and Tan. They're cool knives. Much smaller than they look in the pictures, IMO.

I personally own two Combat Troodons purchased at retail. One is the bowie style blade, the other is a double edge. Both black tactical.

I think Microtech makes some of the sweetest knives around.

Thanks, Honestly. I am pretty much sold on a combat troodon, I guess I'm just somewhat curious about the ADO... I cant find any quality reviews.

Do you have any specific questions about the ADO?

They're machined out of a solid piece of steel, decently weighted.
They're just as sharp as all the other MTs, but I couldn't say for sure how long they hold an edge. I haven't abused one yet. I really can't see a reason for this knife to fail.
The hollow in the handle extends about the length of the grooves. So it's pretty deep.
The sheath is keyed on the tanto version.
The sheath comes with an adjustable belt loop so you can wear the knive in any direction you want.
The retention on the sheath is really tight. If you had this knife just slipped in to a boot and tried to yank it out, I would venture to say it would almost always come out with the sheath on it.

If you had a reason to carry a fixed blade and wanted something really unobtrusive, I would say the ADO is great. If you're looking for something to EDC, then definitely go for the Troodon.

Thanks for the Info! I don't plan on abusing it, I would like to IWB carry a fixed blade every now and again. I like to mix it up sometimes. I was just wondering mainly about the 200+$ price tag on it, also just different peoples experiences with Double edged compared to a tanto, maybe some of the serration experience others may have. Just what direction in which to go with an ADO for a defensive fixed blade. What I think I will end up doing is probably getting both, I think for an EDC choice the combat troodon in tanto would be what I want. For the ADO I do like the double edged plain blade. I was just looking for different opinions, but seeing as the price point It's hard to find many.

I would not try and carry the ADO for defense w/o modifying the sheath. It's too hard to get out w/o depressing the release on the retainer. The sheath is a plastic material though so it's easy to modify.

The upside to serrations are how much easier they make cutting items that don't cut well. Seat belts would be the best example.

If you intend to sharpen the knife yourself, then straight edge is probably the way to go. Microtech will sharpen the knife for you, but you have to ship it to them. If it's an auto, you will have to ship the knife to your dealer and have them send it to Microtech on your behalf. The process takes 4-8 weeks.

How would you recommend modifying the sheath? Also what blade would you choose for a defensive role with the ADO? ( I realize this is a somewhat "touchy" subject, but I was just asking your preference and why.)

Nuts. I had this nice long reply written out and the site logged me out.

Short and sweet this time around.

I prefer dual edge because in a serious knife fight it gives you more cutting surfaces. Down side is that a pointy tip can be blunted and that makes it difficult to stab with.

Tanto has more utility and fewer sharp edges.

For the sheath, the retainer has a pretty aggressive lip. So I would file the lip down so the knife releases with one hand. I have pretty big hands and I can barely press the retaining clip while trying to pull out the knife. It's still a sweet knife though.

Thanks, I got my hands on an ADO today and I'm really glad I didn't impulse buy one. They're so small its a joke, its a 200+$ letter opener.
