Anyone heard anything new about the supposedly soon-to-be forthcoming MT Amphibian?

Any word on what its actual form will be?

With plunge-lock or linerlock?

With or without rubber inserts?

With Ti or Al handle?

With 3.5" or 4" blade?

I talked to Tony Monday a week ago and yes there are some changes and he said they are the changes that I suggest right here on BladeForums

Yes they do actually listen to us and I am glad he did. In it's present form the Amphibian would be a HUGE bomb. So here are the changes.

It will be similar to what you have seen in the ads visually.

It will have a Microbar lock like the SOCOM and there WILL be an auto version!
The cam lock mechanism has been ditched and this was my main beef with the design. It has merrit but not on this knife or in it's present form.

Right now it will have the rubber inserts. I will be at Microtech on Wednesday and will push for a sculpted handle like the original prototype which is waaaaayyyyy cool.

AL Handle which will save $$$
There may be a Ti version at some point

It should be just under 4" but that may change as well.
I will let you know a lot more after I talk to Tony on Wednesday

Hey want to here a secret released here on BFC first?

How about a Microtech collaboration with me on a Bali-Song!
Tony and I will work out the design soon (starting Wednesday) and I will let you all know how the project progresses. He and I both have lots of idea but you can bet your ass this thing will rock!

More new latter and I will update you on the Amphibian.

That would be AWESOME! The prototype looked incredible, the "release" version looks ok but NOTHING like the prototype!! Tell them that WE WANT THE PROTOTYPE!!!!

Thanks Mike, this is good news. I hope you are successful in convincing them to go with a sculpted handle. The inserts are the only thing that bugs me about the redesign -- I just wonder if they can produce the sculpted version at a price that we (ELU) can afford. At least they got rid of the skeletonized clip from the original concept knife.

Please keep us updated.

Great news Mike! I'm looking forward to the Amphibian and the MT Balisong!

This better "not" be an April fools joke!

Mike,
If you don't mind sharing a bit more with us, how did the "cam" lock differ from a button/plunger lock (a fairly robust and reliable design) and what were/are its shortcomings? Thanks.

The cam lock automatically engaged to prevent the button lock from being accidently disengaged. Hard to close because you have to operate a slide as well as the button, but you don't have to worry about the blade closing on your hand like a liner lock. One of the big reasons I was interested in the Amphibian was the different lock. I suspect the microbar is cheaper to make and easier to get use to. I was glad MT was going to try something new with locks but, with a microbar lock, I am not interested in the Amphibian anymore. I am really disappointed.

Cheers,
Damon
