Hello everyone
this is my first post in this forum :)
i got myself a Microtech DOC for christmas, it arrived today. it was a new one straight of the box. first thing i noticed was that it's nearly impossible to flip with one finger, i needet both hands to get it open, then i noticed that the lock uf is by ~80%.
i have flipped it out a few times now and it doesn't really get smoother..
next thing is the lock up, i'm a knife noob ( started collecting like 3 months ago ) and have never seen a knofe with a that high lock up
does anyone own a doc and had the same problem?

Are you pressing the lock back with your fingers when you flip it? If you are that is your problem.

When I got mine it was damn near impossible to open with my index finger pad like a normal flipper. I broke it in by using the crease opposing the underside of my first knuckle of my index finger, closest to the finger tip. Better leverage like that. I flipped it like that about 100 times then all the sudden it broke in now it flips hard with barely any pressure.

Send it in for service as a LAST resort!
Try some mineral oil in the pivot.....very little.....and flip & flick the snot out of it!!!
Awesome Christmas gift my friend!!
Enjoy it!
Joe

^ this.

Try any means that you can before sending it back to MT. You may never get it back.

i must try that with the mineral oil, hope that it works..
i have heard the horror stories about their customer service, so sending it is no option for me ^^

I just picked one up last month...05/2015 on mine.

Lock-up is 50% on mine. I broke it in by flipping it probably 200+ times over the course of a couple movies...drove my wife bat shit crazy : )

Has broken in quite nice. The thumb stud is still useless because of the strong de-tent. As RevDevil mentioned, if you have the slightest bit of pressure on the liner, it will feel harder to open. Give it some time and it will break in, throw in some gun oil and it will be a-ok. The lock-up is the only thing that stands out as an issue...

I've had mine for just over six months now, dated 03/2015 with lockup around 45%. That's where it was when it arrived, and has stayed. It didn't take much to break in, and is my favorite flipper :)
As for the lock up, that's unfortunately a matter for Microtech's customer service department, replacing the insert. I have heard that they are getting better.

i hope it gets better with the time and i will see if the lock up will stay like that, if not, i think i will send it to mt

I am guessing it won't flick also. If you are going to work manually, maybe wear gloves. I was breaking in one of mine, my finger slipped and sliced my thumb. lol Once you get it loose enough to flick, then do that a trillion times. That should work it loose.

yeah maybe gloves aren't a bad idea, and i guess you learned from it :)
i hope youre right, i have flipped it open quite a bit ober the day, it's slowly getting smoother

Is it possible to swap for another at place of purchase?
If follow recommended actions in previous posts by those who have one.

Those actually aren't thumbstuds, they're the blade stops. If you look at the frame, there are no cutouts for easy access. Yes it can be flicked with your thumb, but it wasn't designed with that in mind. The manual DOC is a dedicated flipper.

I've handled two DOC's. Did a sharpening job on one for a buddy, and it was what I call a "lazy" flipper. Similar to the ZT 0560, but worse. Then I handled a new DOC at a local knife shop, and found it extremely difficult to open. Any pressure on the lockbar would make it impossible to open. Watch your finger position and hopefully it will break in.

It's not very difficult to adjust the lock up on a frame lock...normally...Loosen the body screws (but not the pivot), place the knife in a drawer as pictured below, apply gentle force to the drawer (not too much or you'll goof up your centering), and retighten the screws. Unfortunately, MT uses those weird tri-wing screws, so you need to have special tools to do this.:(

Two production D.O.C. I own that were LNIB when acquired. The green (prod. 02/2015) one is wonderful - flips and closes super smoothly after minimal break in. The black one (prod. 07/2013) flips OK, but needs two hands to close. Is this (see lock engagement linked below) what the drawer squeeze is supposed to correct?
