Is there a forum especially for Microtechs? I need some help with fixing blade play(mini socom), anybody have any tips?

It could be several things.

Is the blade play during opening, when it is open or when the blade is closed ? Or all of the above ?

Does your mini have Torx screws or the new proprietary screws ?

If it has Torx screws try to tighten the pivot screw a bit at a time. Open and close to see if there are any changes. If not tighten a bit more. Do not over tighten.

If the knife has the new proprietary screws. . .and you don't have a "special" wrench. . . :(

Your option, then, is to purchase a wrench or send it back to MT for repair.

Try posting in the auto forum here at Bladeforums. Alot of MT collectors there. It does seem the the latest run of the mini elite socoms have some blade play. GigOne gave good advice. Give it a try.

Thanks!

The blade play is when its open. There is a little up and down play, but a little more side to side play.
The screws have 3 holes in a triangular pattern. Im guessing thats proprietary screws.

Where can I get a special wrench?

PS. The Mini SOCOM is a auto.

Thanks for the link.

So other than tightening the pivot scew there no cure for blade play?

No problem. . .

Could be that the pivot is seated properly. . .but generally. . .this problem yields a great deal of blade play.

It could also be that the washer(s) aren't seated properly or that one is missing or one has been damaged.

You should be able to see if a washer is missing. I've found it best to take the knife down, clean it up, relube and put it back together.

A few things come to mind, first, plunge locks typically do have a tiny amount of play, it can be either side to side, or up and down, and as long as its minimal, its not a major issue, however, unfortunately (for you), I have seen plenty of mini socoms with no play at all, but, BEFORE you send it to MT, and spend the next year, or 2, or 3... wondering where it went, this may sound strange, but adding a decent amount of a good synthetic oil to the pivot area and thoroughly working it in can often cure a slight amount of play, hard to believe, but true.

Finally, I would be very leary of attempting to adjust the pivot screw, I tried to do just that on a MT i used to own, it was loktited in a major way, and all I did was strip the screw and I was being pretty careful. Frankly, Im not even sure that tightening the pivot screw will help since the handle slabs as far as I know cannot really move closer to each other, nor does the pivot have washers that i can see.
