Most, if not all, of the upcoming MicroTech Knives (2013-2014 Production) have Bohler-Uddeholm ELMAX steel for the blade.

Anybody have any experience with the MicroTech ELMAX in general and in comparison to their great S35VN?

Please Note: I'm NOT interested in getting into any discussions/arguments about the perceived issues with ELMAX in general with other knife manufacturers.

Im gonna ask a dumb question....

has microtech ever had an issue with any steel they used before? If not id say you are good to go. Elmax has been used in europe well for awhile now. So the steel cant be an issue only the maker of the knife. Cant say I remember lots o talk about microtech not doing steel well....

True that.

I just ordered a Microtech D.O.C. Flipper Knife Aluminum Flipper (Model# 153-1) in ELMAX so we'll see. The D.O.C. is the collaboration between Mick Strider and Anthony Marfione which won the Knife Collaboration Of The Year at Blade Show 2013.

Elmax is an excellent knife steel, in my limited experience. But certain internet metallurgists have issues with it.

I have two double edged elmax microtechs. The first one I got was probably the first run they did in elmax. It was not as sharp from mt as I would normally expect and it took a little time to get it sharp. I can't vouch for it staying sharp, as neither see much use. The second I got came as sharp as expected. Again neither see much use so I cannot vouch for how well it will hold an edge.

From what I have learned about Elmax, it is critical to follow strict post heat treat guidelines when finish grinding.
If Microtech is offering their latest models in Elmax, then they must be very confident in their process.

I noticed their website states elmax being used for all of the models but I'm not sure that isn't a typo. The DOC run in Elmax appears to be over and the S35V models are being produced. They list the fixed blade Crosshair as being elmax also and I haven't seen one. It would be interesting.

I don't think they have released the new Elmax models to dealers yet, but I could be mistaken.

The MT DOC (Model 153-1) that I ordered today from BladeHQ is ELMAX but it's the only DOC model in ELMAX they had and the rest are S30V (not S35VN).

I received my MicroTech DOC (Model 153-1) in ELMAX on Sep. 26th. It's dated 06/2013 with S/N: 00520.

It's a great beefy (7.55 ounces) flipper with design features from both Strider & MT. Flipper action is assured and getting smoother. Like most MT knives it has a very sharp blade and ELMAX cuts very nicely. The blade is 3.75" long and 0.156" thick. The titanium frame lock has steel inserts. Best finger choil design/placement I've seen.

The MT DOC flippers come in both ELMAX and S30V.
