Hey all, I just received my newest knife today!

The Microtech MTX2 with a partially serrated Satin finish blade. For all of you waiting for this knife, here is my review of it.........
:barf: :barf: :barf: :barf:

The darn thing shows up fresh from the factory with a chip in the blade & a total of 3 scratches also in the blade. Oh, did I forget to mention that the blade had some play to it! I guess this is the quality that I can expect from Microtech huh?! Maybe a bad one that escaped the factory, but still!

Oh well, my new replacement one is coming Wednesday & this piece of crap is going back ASAP!

Overall it has a nice feel to it, kinda hefty, but nothing bad. It weighs in at 4.8oz on my postal scale. Seems just a hair smaller in length than my LCC's, but a little bit wider...... but I cannot do a direct comparison becasue Microtech has had BOTH of mine for almost 2 months now  ...though they said I will have them back next week sometime. The auto opening is quick and positive, but there is just that little bit of play in the S30V blade....The all carbon fiber handle is quite attractive & has a hole in the bottom of the handle for a lanyard, which they don't supply :grumpy:
There are 2 things that bug me beside the above mentioned items.....the thumb studs seem too big for the knife. If they were smaller, you would be able to open the knife easier. They do have a neat Carbon Fiber inlay on the blade under them which is a nice touch. Next is the backspacer that looks cheap. It appears to be a black G-10 type.
The carry is tip up only. If you wanted to remove the pocket clip, guess what....you can't! Microtech refuses to supply an allen wrench for it's special screws on here. Doesn't matter to me though....I already bought a full set that will take it appart if I desire to do so. Everyone else...would have to send it back to them & grow old waiting for their knife to come back.
It comes with a nice nylon sheath that has an adjustable clip on it so you could use this for other knives if needed. The back of the pouch has an adjustable velcro opening for various sized belts. The total weight of the sheath is 1.6oz.

I will try to do a follow up with the new one if it is even worth a crap when I get it ;) I hope that it is.............

I know, I know...not much of a review....but I just wanted to give people a little heads up on what happened to me with this new model.

Sixfeetsdeep, I also shake in fear when thinking about buying another MT...Some weeks ago I got old, good mini socom 10/98 and, man it is PERFECT EDC knife, absolutely zero bladeplay, very solid lock etc. And old good MT presentation box just for about 120 USD! Old MT knives are nothing compared with new ones, apart from OTF as I have heard. Quality is coming down and I can absolutely empathize with you when my 400 USD dissapears and MT thing is quality-sucked knife. Good luck to you and write when you got new MTX2.
BTW I wonder about CMTX5 - overall quality and usefulness of this new clip-release mechanism.

Well, I received one of the new ones today.

No more blade play & no marks or scratches or anything wrong with it! :)

Well, my opinion on it is this so far......It's a beautiful knife. Nice fit & finish & fits well in the hand. But again, the thumb studs are a bit too big & get in the way of using the D/A mode. Speaking of that, the knife that I sent back & now this one, both of them open differently in the auto mode. Yet another trait amongst the Microtech's. The 1st one opened nice & hard. This new one still opens fast, but not as quickly as the 1st. After "trying" to adjust the blade tension....which cannot be done....it's either tight or loose.....I applied Militec to the pivot & have been trying to work it in. Seems to have helped a little bit...... Anyway, closing the knife with one hand, the top of the blade kinda gets in the way....I don't really know how to explain it, but it's weird. It's almost that the knife is a little too wide.....it can still be done without much hassle, but not as easy as my Lcc's.

I'll be putting it through it's paces tomorrow, so we will see how it will stack up.

By the way........I also plan on using the Mothers Mag & Aluminum Polish on this blade as well. Can't wait to see the results. It did wonders for my Sebenza blade, which now looks like a mirror :D

Post the results later............

why is it that MT seems to have a SERIOUS problem with the fit and finish of their blades nowadays?

It used to be that MT was regarded as the top production company, with them being the benchmark for fit and finish. I had a MT mini-socom elite pass through my hands. Was hoping for the type of edge that was super sharp. My spydercos are way sharper. Also, the use of that 3-hole pins is IMO, terrible. Doesn't look good and leaves the purchase no choice but to send it back to MT for tweaking, repairs etc. That is compounded by the fact that many people are now saying that MT's customer service is not what it used to be...That's not good news at all.

Can anyone shed light on why this is happening to MT?

for me it is commercialism and preying on good reputation achieved in the past. Look, when you have a firm and want to get more and more money - why not lower quality when you have excellent opinion about your products?
People just buy it just because it is MT. Of course if this is the real reason of such a situation - it is blind path - because customers won't rely on former reputation forever. I liked MT very much but after many failures of it's knives - I had woken up and just got suspiciously to any brand and knife when more than 100 USD come into play. Sometimes being realist is just more affordable.
Like I said - MT? yes, but older ones - Socom, Amphbiian, UDT...I can buy them without hesitation. But newer knives - I have to check it out first.
I would almost shoot myself if I bought 400 USD knife with lock failure or blade play - pay the cash and next day send to MT headquarters for minimum half of a year for repairing, just great...

I hope that somebody else than Marfiones will manage MT customer and quality policy soon, everybody would make a profit of it.

SOrry for offtopic, sixfeetdeep - congratulations of this MTX, I hope this time it will serve you well!

It probably won't serve me too well......I used it for the first time today.

Kinda big and clunky :( It still worked well, but my other edc knives work better. Still, I will continue to use it because it is sharp as hell & it's new.
---Until the newness wears off ;)

Well see, maybe it will grow on me...........

Well, here is a follow up. I have been using the knife for the past 5 days & I am REALLY starting to like it!
That is kinda a surprise to myself...at first I really didn't like it all that much.
Now after using it & playing around with it alot, I have to say that I am very happy with it.
I have overcome with it's first thought flaws by just adjusting my closing style & now I can do it as quickly as most knives. For my cutting duties, it does a superb job. Still NO blade play & still solid. The blade has been polished a bit & I am still trying to finish her off.........man, the S30V is a pain to polish! :(
But all in all, I really do like it. STILL waiting for Microtech to send me my 2 LCC's. When I do get them, I will post again on how I like the 2 side by side for usage.

If anyone is interested in getting a Microtech MTX2 in the part serrated Satin finish blade with the all Carbon Fiber handle, I have one on here for sale. Yeah....I bought 2 of them....don't know why.....just becasue I guess :)

Sure....I jinx'd myself! I was playing with it on the couch yesterday & as I get up, I see a screw on the cushion....it was one of the screws from the handle  Oh well....lucky I bought a set of bits for their screws. Pretty much all of the screws on the handle were loose. After taking care of that little problem....everything is back to good.

Oh well....... :)

After looking at some pics of the MTX2, it sure is a beauty. I really like the design...cf handles and bolsters and a nice looking blade. A quick froogle search resulted in a price of approx $350-$400...is that right? While it *appears* to be a nice piece, reading about your experiences and others like it about MT in general...for that kind of money, I'd go with a custom. Though I gotta admit, the all CF is very cool looking.

Well, if your interested in doing a deal, I happen to have my other one on here for sale. I will let it go for $300 shipped & insured through the USPS Priority Mail if you would like to see what's the hub-buds all about.

Like I said....at first I didn't like it, but after using it for almost 2 weeks now, it has grown on me.

I had totally forgotten that I had another LCC around the house. My pride & joy, Micarta handle 1/2 serrated S90V blade :)

Side by side, the LCC's handle is about 3/16" longer & the blade is about an 1/8".
The weight difference between the 2 on my postal scale:

LCC: 5.7oz
MTX2: 4.8oz

Handle width is wider on the MTX2.

The blade i=on the LCC is more of a spearpoint (I don't know the correct names for the blades, sorry)
The MTX2's blade is more of an upsweep design.
Your call on that one...I like both.

Let me know if your interested.
