Hello my name is Andrew. In the past 3 months I have purchased 3 different Microtech knives. I will review each one in this post, and I will also speak about how I feel on Microtech as a company compared to other high end knife makers ( not trying to start a flame war, just my .02).
I would like to first start off with my very first Microtech, the combat troodon. I purchased a Combat Troodon from Thehollowgrind.com website ( thats a great site by the way with great deals and superb service.) Initially I was disappointed with how the knife preformed for the price tag. Out of the box I had some failures to extract back into its handle, this happened several times. I was able to use some REM oil and have not seen that problem again. My next problem with the knife was the screws were coming lose very frequently, I even lost one due to it flying out. Buying their specialty tool was ridiculous by the way, them using proprietary screws I think is very stupid, and makes me quite angry. However after getting the special wrench head, Some loc-tite fixed that problem. As far as cutting goes, and edge retention I am happy to report I am quite pleased with it. I EDC it quite a bit becuase its so sleek and carries so deep compared to other knives I am used to. Over all I would say this knife is worth the money, just expect to have to do some do it yourself work to make it 100%. Over all rating, 8.5/10
My next knife I purchased was the ADO, double edged. This was by far the worst knife I've ever owned, it came out of box very dull. The pictures also miss-represent the size of the knife, it really is nothing more than a 200$ letter opener. The sheath was nice though, if it was a little smaller you could maybe pull it off as a boot knife. I would NOT recommend anyone get this knife. I wont mention where I got the ADO from, as I don't blame them and don't feel the need to give them bad press. The ADO is also nearly impossible to sharpen due to how small the edge on it really is. Over all rating, 2/10
My most recent Microtech is the Cross hair. This fixed blade is a beauty, this knife has real potential in a self defense scenario. It came out of box offensively sharp. The only negative I give the Cross hair is the lanyard they tie to the handle, there's really no need for it. All it does is hit your hand if you were to swing the knife. The sheath works quite well, but the attachment piece that is used to attach the sheath to your belt was GARBAGE. Trying to draw it from the belt was impossible, because it would take the kydex sheath with it. I went and bought a tek-lok large adapter to replace it and since then have had no problems. I would say the crosshair is probably the best deal that Microtech has to offer, the price point is really great for what you get. Over all rating 9/10
( Purchased the Crosshair from Bladehq.com Those guys are also a good site.)
My thoughts on Microtech as a company.... I have not had to deal with their customer service, but judging by the way they put their knives together I am sure I would be very angry having to do so. The proprietary screws are completely un-needed and just add an extra expense to an already pricey knife. Besides the ADO all other knives I have handled from them are superbly sharp, and very well made. I would continue buying from Microtech, in fact I plan on getting a Halo V once I can find one that isn't tanto, and has a red handle.
