I've been thinking about buying a Microtech SOCOM. Preferably the Bravo. What a cool knife and it comes in M390. Never paid it much attention, until recently.
I own a DOC which is a fine knife, but strongly considering that it might be unnecessary- If I find a SOCOM. I never carry the DOC because it is just too cumbersome. In fact I bought it not knowing much about Microtech, but thought it was cool. It's nice to have different kinds of blades yet at the end of the day, the reason I purchase them is primarily for some type of use, even if it's light carry. Sounds crazy for that high end of a blade perhaps, but that is my perspective.

My question is this: Given the fact that the DOC is discontinued or largely unavailable is it wise? The reason I ask is because it appears I've bought a few knives which are now discontinued and seem to have risen in collector value. IF the DOC or any knife I have is rising in value as an investor of sorts I'd keep it. However, collector value for knives is foreign to me.
I do this with firearms though, which I'm much more familiar with, really. Start in one direction then decide to go another. So, in essence I use the value of what I have to acquire what I want next so to speak.

Any help or direction in terms of source for collector info is appreciated.

Rare & discontinued Microtechs tend to increase in value.

If that stirs the collector within you, keep it. It’s not taking up much space.

I have a few discontinued knives that have increased in value. I have no intention of selling them, as I like the knives to begin with. Knowing that it’s something rare-ish & desirable adds to my satisfaction of ownership and (usually) use of the knife.

The use part certainly doesn’t contribute to increasing monetary value, but that’s not why I’m into knives anyway.

You raise a solid point. It doesn’t appear that the DOC is rare, just discontinued LOL. So, it probably will increase in value a bit over time. I prefer larger EDCs but this thing is cumbersome- and a fine piece of workmanship to boot

I haven’t used it nor the other ones that are discontinued, though I’ve been tempted. Believe me

Is there a source that prices blades for collector value?

Still on the fence though

One needs to be a Gold member here to ask specific pricing questions.

If you snoop around online you might be able to find one and see what they’re asking (I was able to find one).

Back when I spent time on Ebay there was a way to see prices from old closed listings. Not sure if that’s still doable.

Unfortunately searching the Exchange here usually isn’t too helpful, as most folks delete the asking price once a sale closes.

Yes, I understand, but I’m not asking for pricing questions or even seriously considering selling anything. Which is why I inquired about rising collector value.

Noticed that on the exchange. Any idea why?

eBay- yeah, there’s just about anything you want there. Crazy prices on some things

Ive been in your shoes. When I first got into knives I HAD to have a Benchmade Skirmish and a titanium Spyderco ATR. I also had a cool Sebenza with the Insingo blade. I decided I didn't like frame locks for daily carry and I saw something I thought I wanted more than the ATR. I REALLY wish I hadnt sold them. Then I got into guns and other stuff. Had I kept those Id have the makings of a decent collection right now. Now if I like a knife, I buy it, I carry it, and I keep it. Now as far as "investing" I wouldnt look at it that way since that means you won't carry them. I actually had a ridiculous experience last weekend. Apparently I opened a Coinbase account in Jan 2016 and put $100 into Bitcoin. It was likely an ambien moment b/c I never remembered I did it. When I tried to open an account last weekend, it said my email was in use. I tried a couple passwords and what do you know? Care to guess what $100 in Bitcoin purchased then is worth now? There are better investments and strategies. Keep the DOC. A Marfione DOC is on my list for sure.

You got my attention with an early investment in Bitcoin.

Yeah, you fellas are strongly convincing me to keep the Marfione DOC. Til recently I wasn’t even sure what the significance of that collaboration was.

Hard to believe they didn’t sell well. Never knew that either

I wasn't aware of the DOC until just recently. I cant speak to sales, but it was a pricey knife marketed to a specific clientele. Much like the Benchmade Skirmish and the Spyderco ATR in titanium. There's also alot of really cool knives out. I think the DOC is a killer piece. If its still in pristine shape keep it in a box for a while until you decide. The version I want is like 2k. I will definitely be carrying it.
