Microtech otf vs. multiple manual folders on my wish list?!?!

There is just something about the Microtech Ultratech that is calling me, but I want to many folders. This one would be purely for the cool factor, so to spend the money I want to make sure it's worth the price.

Manual folders I still want:

Hogue Ex02
Benchmade Mini Onslaught
Emerson Vindicator
Spyderco Southard Black (already have the normal version, but I love it, this is actually in the front running)

So set me straight, I have no autos in my collection, is it time? Or should I stay away from the shiny object, and get back to continuing the manual folder count?

The manuals you listed will all have similar cool factor, but they'll also be a lot more usable. So if you must get an ultratech, Id say hold off until there's nothing else on your list.

But it's your money, man. Do whatever makes you happy:thumbup:

A user asked me for a knife recommendation among a list of knives, the Southard being one. I've never handled the Southard (or any others on his list) but that Southard looks really, really, really cool. I mean you already have one, but the all black one I saw looked super cool. My only complaint was the pocket clip can't be switched for lefties. But most people are right handed so if you are, it won't be a big deal for you.

Is the Ultratech D/A? I have to admit there would be something cool about checking out a D/A auto knife. In and and out with the flick of a switch? It sounds cool. But like Krissig said, less utilitarian likely.

I had the OTF itch myself over the summer. Since they are illegal to carry I took the MT Troodon off my wish list and bought a Lightning OTF and a Brous Reloader with the money. Itch scratched, and no regrets whatsoever. Yes the OTF is a ton of fun to play with, but like I said it's illegal to carry so it never goes in the pocket.

Hi five bro! Purchased a Lightning for $20 just for the heck of it and it was on sale special at BladeHQ so I thought, it's cheap enough!

I get the OTF itch, when I was single and didn't have any Kids running around I had a coffee table full of Microtech's to mess with while watching TV after work- can't carry them around here :(

After having the kids they just took up space in the drawer or safe so I sold them all. I've bought a few here and there since I like to have one around to show off but they usually get sold after a while.

If you have the time to occasional mess with it or don't mind it sitting, or better yet, if you can legally carry it then scratch that itch-they're awesome knives !

If you don't have the time or place or can't carry it I'd go with the above suggestion and complete your list of wants first and then re evaluate wether or not you still want one at that point.

If you can float the bill the Scarab is even cooler to mess with and easier to fire with the bigger button, same with the Combat Troodon. The Halo series of knives are absolutely unbelievably fun to have.

No matter what, get what makes you happy and enjoy it. The rest will work itself out.

Seconded, the S/A knives like the Exodus, Nemesis, Halo etc. are a lot more fun than the D/A ones.

Thanks everyone. Where I live, no problems with carrying one at all.

The Microtechs are really cool and very well made. I handle one everytime I go into a local gun shop that carries them. I am always tempted to buy one, but like said above it would be useful for nothing more than playing with while I watch tv. Legal to carry in my state but I never would, it's just not a practical knife for normal cutting tasks.

Being a knife guy though, sometimes I know that the itch just has to be a scratched, so I would judge no one for buying one.

well im going to vote OTF over your other choices... you already have a southard, ive heard mixed reviews on the hogue, the other two are solid, but an ultratech is a well made knife with more wow factor than the others. It's also the least versatile since cleaning is a PITA- but you need to scratch the itch before you can move forward

everytime i push the switch on mine i cant help but smile... they must make the handles from unicorn horns

I have to say..get the off auto. :) While I can't legally carry here, they're just way too much fun to play with. :D

SOOOO.......I went to the store and played with a few otf knives. Within a minute, I had a few fail to fires on an HK otf. It just put a sour taste in my mouth. Yes, it's not the Ultratech, but with the feeling I had in my stomach I know if I spent the money on one and had this happen I would be pissed.

SO, I think I've scratched the itch per say, and now sticking with folders for now.

I bought a UTX-70 first. It's a pretty cool little knife. I thwon bought an Ultratec S/E. I carry it. I use it. It's darn handy. It's fast to open AND close. I like framelocks too, but they take more finess to close one handed that my OTFs. It's only a fraction of a second but it makes a difference. I also like how compact they are in the pocket.

I'm looking to pick up a used scarab, troodon or combat troodon now.

Just looked back at this thread, 4 years ago, but how my collection ended to this point.

From my original post:

Hogue Ex02 - (no interest now, not even on my radar)
Benchmade Mini Onslaught - (never got, and kinda glad I didn't, I'm liking thinner and easier to carry blades)
Emerson Vindicator - (got it, and fricking love it!, got me into Emerson, and then got a Sheepdog also)
Spyderco Southard Black (stayed with the one I had, and think it would have been overkill to have 2 )

I ended up moving hard into the side opening autos, then to the OTFs, ending with 2 ultras and 1 - 85. Now again looking for a 3rd ultratech just wish they didn't stop making the red versions.

Funny to look at how it ended up after 4 years.

It’s up to you obviously and none of us would make that decision for you.

That said here is my two cents. Part of what makes the Southard so beautiful is that stonewashed blade. It is among the nicest stonewashes I own. The black version does not hae this. So in my estimation you already own the nicer Southard. If the Southard is at the top of your list then get the ultratec since you already have the nicer southard.

I like the UTX-85 best of the Ultratechs - very little blade difference but noticeably shorter grip.

That UTX-85 is a sweet knife. I handled one last week at a local shop and keep thinking about it. You know what that means... Sooner or later, it'll be in my pocket and my wallet will be about $240 lighter. Funny thing is that I don't really have a use for it other than as a fun letter opener.

Microtech makes some nice knives. Have not sprung for one yet, but I will in time. Cannot carry in Illinois (my state) unless you have a CCW for handguns...not that - that makes any sense.

As far as I know none of the manufacturers of the manual knives listed have stolen designs from other companies and then sued both that company and a blogger for pointing it out.

The manuals get my vote. (Benchmade makes a lovely OTF called the Phaeton of you still want an auto. All the fun and function of the Microtech, but with real customer service and without the skeezy patriarch.)

Edit: Yo Mama Yo Mama just caught the necro-post here.:thumbsdown::poop::D
