Looking to purchase a tactical folder to carry on remote hikes purely as a defensive weapon.
Narrowed it down to the Microtech Socom Elite or the ZT 0560/1.
Any comments?
Thanks.

As a purely defensive weapon I wouldn't pick either. I'd either go for a waved folder or a fixed blade. Of the two specific knives you mention, Socom Elite, all day long.

While I like Kershaw/ZT more as a company, the Socom Elite is a better knife by far. I honestly don't know of a knife that's better than a Socom Elite.

Another vote for Microtech. The Socom Elite is an excellent knife.

Socom elite if you can find it in cts-204p. If price is a factor then pick a 0561 on the exchange for about $165 and you won't be disappointed. If you want a pure defense folder than I would go with a cold steel recon xl clip point.

Of your choices...Microtech all day long...I own them all and my MT is my personal favorite. The Delta Socom would be a solid choice as well. As others have mentioned...a fixed blade would be a far better choice, though.

Am I the only one that red flagged the words "defensive weapon" & "hikes"? The times I've gone into uncharted mountains for hiking, I've always had with me a firearm with plenty of ammo. Planning on getting into a knife fight with a 300-700lb animal hunts all day? Fixed blades for hiking. Folder for small utility tasks. Fire arm for self defense.

Of the 2 I would go socom because for defensive use the pointier the better, especially against animals/hide.

You saw defensive weapon and thought animals...I saw defensive weapon and thought screwballs...I always carry a firearm for these treks...honestly that is my mindset...it never occurred to me that he might be talking about defense against animals...

Hey OP...how about some clarification? Animals or wack jobs?

-thanks

You can buy two of the ZT 0561 for one of the great MT Socom Elite with CTS-204P steel! The ones with S35VN are quite a bit less.

You weren't the only one.

Primarily for defense against WACK JOBS... Can't legally carry a firearm in a state park. The Microtech it is then... Now to find one.

It was said before I had a chance, couldn't agree more.

Don't get the tanto.

Good choices. I'm also for the MT Socom Elite over ZT 0560/561. Both are outstanding.

There are quite a few Elites out there with tanto blade partially serrated. Finding a clip point plain edge is near impossible for a good price. You can find clip point blades with partial serrations mostly not in black aluminum handles with grip inserts.

Try Hollow Grind. They are a MicroTech & BladeForums dealer. I was able to get a black handle with carbon fiber inserts and stonewashed clip point partially serrated edge blade.
