Hello

I am a law obeying person, without any criminal record and I'm about to travel to California and NY (from abroad).
It hurts to think of leaving all of my OTF Microtechs at home, but I've yielded to leaving Makora. I'm still curious about what will be the real consequences of me carrying UTX-70. Its blade is just 0.41" longer, than those, legal in California. Do you think I'll get in trouble, if my UTX-70 is found during some random search by police? I mean will they take out a ruler and measure it or are they not that picky if the knife doesn't look that serious.
I'll be cutting fruits with it or doing some comparably innocent stuff mostly. I'm not looking for trouble at all.

The same about NY?

I looked several places and it wasn't quite clear what kind of mechanism this knife uses. Is it a slider???? Also, it looks a bit "dagger" like, which might raise some eyebrows.

As for legality in California, I can legally carry a 4" folder most everywhere, concealed or unconcealed.....but some localities do have 3" laws, so if you want to always be sure you are legal, keep it under 3".

I have found anywhere where the law specifically mention "sliders" (if your knife is a slider?), but it does specifically mention that "folders" are legal, so I would stick with a folder which is ok for sure!!!

My EDC knife in town is two Emerson Combat Karambits. Other good choices might be something like the Emerson Bullnose Karambit or CQC-14.

Yes you'll get in trouble (if the issue ever comes up).
The odds of encountering LEO up on his knife laws is not in your favor.
They'll see its a switchblade and confiscate it without measuring.
And seeing how you'll be wilfully violating the law ... don't do it

I think that the fact that it is an "auto" and it has a double sided blade (making it a "dagger"), make it a risky choice.....

In California, it is a felony to carry a switchblade that has a blade 2'' or longer. There is a number of companies that make Cali legal 1.9" switchblades.

In New York State, it is generally illegal to carry or possess any switchblade. There is an exemption that allows switchblade carry by a licensed hunter, angler, or trapper who is carrying or posessing the switchblade for use in hunting, fishing, and trapping activities. It is important to note that it is illegal to sell switchblades in NYS.

THat's what I know. But can I be sure, that my UTX-70 will be thoroughly inspected in the street, in reality? Given, it's just a random check (which has never happened to me).

Thx.

If, you need a knife in the USA. I would suggest you buy one, when you get there.
Knives on airplanes is a big risk here. In your baggage it'll be taken from you.
Not worth the risk here. On the streets they'll take it, if found on your person.
Each, cop here will be a little bit different, most are O.K.. an reasonable.
NY is a different story. Not much tolerance, for your choice of knife.

If the police find it, you'll probably be arrested, without them taking any measurements.
If you open the knife anywhere in public, bystanders may be frightened enough to dial 911 on you.
Since you're from abroad, you'll go to jail, because the cops & courts won't depend on your showing up to simply pay a ticket.
You'll probably be classified as a 'flight risk", ie, someone who'll run, or just get back on the plane for home.

In California: 2.41 inches is obviously over 2 inches, no need to measure it...go to jail.
In NY any switchblade is illegal, no matter what length...go to jail.

From your posts, you seem to be under the impression that it'll be OK as long as the police don't look too closely.
That is NOT THE CASE !
It's a switchblade! They'll take the knife, arrest you right away and let the court/judge sort it out.

If you remain "anonomous & invisible", there's only a slight risk you'll be stopped and searched; cops usually need a reason to do so.
So you might get away with it by NOT drawing attention to yourself.
Is it worth the risk?

I'd say to do what Bobofun recommended, leave the knives at home, go to Walmart once you get here, and buy a Gerber paraframe for $20. :)

I didn't realize that the OP is from outside the US. It is illegal to import a switchblade, so you could run into trouble at customs just trying to enter the country. It's not worth it.

Also, in New York it's also illegal to carry a gravity knife, which is defined as any locking knife that can be opened by centirifugial force. Additionally, New York City has a local prohibition on carrying visible knives. I recommend that you buy something like a Swiss Army Knife (non-locking) for your trip, and carry it concealed in your pocket.

I also didn't realize hes a foreigner.
If they find it at any time during his stay,
good chance he'll have visa trouble.

Any OTF's are banned in Australia but I believe that OTF Auto's are legal in most USA States if you work in LE - although I suspect it varies considerably between the jurisdictions.

I think this exemption applies not just to Police but also Community P&P & Prison Officers - i.e. anyone who's duties are in LE

Zzbog,
Look at it this way: If you buy a good, innocent, "user" knife here in the US, you'll have one more knife for your collection when you get home. :)

Looks like it..

I doubt it will be a (e.g. one) knife, and that it will be necessarily user or innocent. Oh, my wallet.

Well, for the ones that are not innocent, just don't go into a bar and wave them around wildly. :)

Удачи
