Microtech versus Benchmade

I'm seeking opinions for the Microtech mini SOCOM
(black finish with combo-drop blade) which is being discontinued. It is under $100.00 now.

I also have been looking for the Benchmade 705 with a similar blade configuration. It's a little more than $100.00

Which is the better knife?

I'll carry it pretty much daily. I'll use it
for scraping, box/letter opening, yard work, camping.

Best regards,

Terry

Welcome to the forums! Tough choice. Both are excellent daily-use knives. I'm a Microholic, so the miniSOCOM would be my choice. IMHO, MT is the best production knife co. around. Since this model has been discontinued, maybe you should get one while they are available. On the other hand, that axis-lock is very nice. I know, get both!

If you start hanging around here, the choice won't be which one, it will be how many.

There's little doubt that the Microtech is a superior knife in terms of desigh and quality control and fit and finish. The pricing you see is a result of closing out the last of the discontinued inventory. It's not a measure of the worth of the knife.

The 705 seems to have a design flaw. They took the Axis lock mechanism from the 710 and then stuffed into the smaller 705 without downsizing it. That has caused a lot of returns because some users consider it uncomfortable to carry in the pocket or unattractive. We had enough returns that we stopped selling it. That's not comment on the quality of the knife for sure, but it's something you should know. The Benhmade Axis lock knives are very well made indeed. The Microtechs are a cut above them in my opinion. Take care.

Never had a Microtech. QC on Benchmade, IMHO, lacks the consistency of other manufacturers. Not that their knives aren't OK, but some are better than others.

I just got my 910 back from the Benchmade warranty department. They even changed the blade to a BT2 blade for a very small fee. Cool huh? Pretty fast too. After it arrived, there was an 8 day turn around time, and then it got shipped, and three days after it got shipped it arrived via the brown truck.

It's an awesome knife. They got about everything right this time. As for Microtech's, I've only bought one, but I'm hooked! My UDT automatic is perfect in every way. You'll love the Microtech's. Both make a nice knife, but the Microtech's are usually better. They also usually cost a lot more, but they are having a discontinued item sale, so thats why you get the savings.

Question. Are all versions of the mini-socom being discontinued? Is it being replaced by something else?

Yup. Micorotech on this one. $99.99 is a killer deal.
