Microtech

I may be biased, but in my opinion, nothing else comes close to Microtechs for hard use except maybe some handmades costing many times more. Microtechs have a lifetime guarentee. Remember that a knife is the least effective and most expensive prybar you will ever use.

Mark,
To simplify the answer to this one it would help if you could tell us exactly which auto you're interested in. MT basically has three categories of autos; OTFs, side opener single action and side opener double action. And believe it or not, even within the OTF class there are different locking mechanisms.

Excellent,
For both the Kestrel and the new SOCOM Elite auto your talking about a plunge lock mechanism which most folks, including the very knowledgeable Chief, agree are very good in terms of strength and reliability. I would venture that most would rate a good plunge lock ahead of the venerable liner lock in these categories (especially on a production knife). I'll admit to having had concerns about taking a plunge lock into a field environment, not knowing how dirt and foreign debris might affect functioning, but I have to say that I've never had a problem personally and can't recall any reports from those who have.

Of course the older style SOCOMs were double action autos and locked up by means of a simple liner lock (and a good one in my estimation).

I haven't owned a Kestrel, but I can vouch for the strength of the SOCOM series knives. And the new SOCOM Elite is even stronger and beefier than its predecessor. Good luck

Mark- I own 3 Kestrels and love them. But, they are on the small side. The SOCOM would probably be a better choice for all-around use but you won't go wrong with either.

Be careful about the warranty. I believe
a military or police ID is required with the return.

You can have it sent back through a dealer if you have a defect. Will cost a little more shipping, but defects in Microtechs are very rare. Then again, I've only owned two in the past, but they were perfect!

Ditto for me. I have owned maybe a dozen Microtechs. I did sell the Kestrel, but that was because it was not right for me. All were well made, strong, sharp and a great value. I like the 4" Tanto SOCOM's, but I had a 3" clip point Mini-SOCOM that was a great knife for the office. Fine products.--OKG
