Mid-90s Voyager, thrown in the garbage

I have, or had, a pair of mid-90s Voyagers that have been constant companions for the last 20 years. A 3" and a 4", both have been EDC, camping blade, pack knife and in the case of the 3" blade, a utility knife when I worked construction. I had torn the plastic clips off of both within weeks or months of buying them, by catching the clip on a door frame in both instances, but had ground them flat which actually made them handier and more concealable. Top gear, both knives, and still hold an edge and perform like the day I bought them.

So...a few years ago I had my wife start carrying the 3" in her purse, because she won't typically carry anything else and I wanted her to have something as a line of defense other than hitting someone with the purse itself. Over multiple instances of travel and trips to restricted areas I would check with her to be sure that she removed it to avoid losing it at the bag check, always reminding her that what she had was a Good Blade that meant something to me and which I could not get again.

Tonight she tells me, nonchalantly, "Oh, I need a new knife." I momentarily flashed back to the Wal-mart knife I used to have her carry, thinking that was still what was in her purse. "When my dad and I got to the arena last knight, they have a metal detector so we had to throw our knives away." I flash to the Voyager, and ask if it was my Good Knife, the one I can't get anymore? "Yeah, sorry."

She parked on the street two blocks from the venue. The show was the Harlem Globetrotters. So...I just lost a sweet old Voyager that was a part of my personal history, so my wife and her father (who carries a box cutter) wouldn't be late to the Harlem Globetrotters. Yay.

Now every time you hear the Harlem globetrotters theme song you'll think of lyn Thompson :)

Sounds like my wife. Everytime she flies i remind her to take her sak out of her purse and she never does and turns it over to the tsa. Ive been funding the tsa auctions with saks for years now. Losing a good knife for a harlem globetrotter show....that hurts.

Oh, man...Now I have this image in my mind of Lynn and the crew hacking off pig heads to a heavy metal version of Sweet Georgia Brown. :D That might actually be pretty cool.

I can thank Jill Jackson for that one. She said she wouldn't buy a broken skull because she'd think of Austin every time she used it. I never pictured anyone in my head before when using a knife.

Carbuncle, that's rough! I feel badly for you just reading about such a loss!

Glass half empty: You lost a great knife that had a lot of personal history.

Glass half full: If it didn't get tossed, some security guard at the arena will be carrying your knife and discovering what a quality knife Cold Steel makes.

Glass half full and ready for a refill: You now have a perfect excuse to buy a new Cold Steel. And there are some smokin' deals out there right now on the new CTS-XHP-bladed, G-10-handled folders!

Lol! Every time the Broken Skull cuts something, you can hear Austin say, "Gimme a hell yeah!"

As for Carbuncle's old Voyager, that's too bad. I would imagine that it's easy for most people to forget their knife when they go to a sporting event, concert, amusement park, or whatever. Myself, I'm almost obsessive about leaving any knives behind before going into such places, to avoid loss or hassle.

BTW, I really wonder if those security guys actually left that knife in the trash, or later dug it out of there when nobody else was looking. I have a hard time believing that most guys who work security would just toss a perfectly good knife in the trash and leave it there.

Tossing them was preferable to walking back two blocks and dropping them into the trunk ?

I think that the typical person would rather toss their knife than to walk back and lose their place in line. IMO, most non-knife 'nuts' do not place much value on a pocket knife, no matter how good it may be.

Carbuncle - that sucks!

A gesture of kindness in an often hard world, how refreshing. :)

That's the kind of thing that is awesome about this community. You don't see that a lot elsewhere. Way to look out for your customers and long time fans, Cold Steel.

Exactly, I was already a customer for life just due to the quality of the product, but the quality of the commitment to customers is amazing.
