I'm looking for a sub-4" fixed blade to be carried mid line tip-up. I want a fairly straight edge so no huge curves or anything like that. It also needs to come to a good point. What would you recommend that fits these requirements? I want to spend $150 at most.

I would need more input as to style, handle material, sheathing, steel, coating or not, and what's it for, fighting, EDC, camping, hunting?
Check out TOPS, ESEE, Becker, Bark River, Fiddleback Forge, JK knives, Fletcher Knives, ML Knives, Scott Rousch, Rick Marchand, and there's Scott Grossman. So many makers here on the BF.
If you give us more info, we can find what you want.

I intend to use it as a last ditch self defense tool. I've owned an Izula before but I'm thinking it has just a little too much curve to it for what I want this knife for. The ESEE 3 is close to what I want but I'm just looking for more options. I don't care about the type of steel or coating so long as it is high quality, I don't want junk. The sheath should definitely be kydex but if it comes with something else I can have kydex made. I like blades like the ESEE 3 but I'm also looking into a wharncliff/modified wharncliff type blade.

So, to me I would think you need something thin, lightweight, and concealed. It might never be used, in a self-defense scenario, I would hope. Unless you are LEO, military, or the like, I would look for a knife that can also be you EDC. You know, so it can be used for general tasks as well as self-defense. I carry one or two fixed blades on a daily basis....many from this pic. I'm thinking you should look at Bark River STS-3, although it's 3/16" thick spine makes it a bit heavy.

I went to the Spyderco factory today and looked at the Street Beat. I like the look and feel of it, the only thing I wish was different is I wish the choil wasn't so deep. Are there any knives like that one but with that one exception?

I've done some more looking and came up with several knives that i like but know essentially nothing about. Here is the list so far-

Chris Reeve Professional Soldier
Spartan Blades Enyo
Spartan Blades Phobos
Grayman Knives Dinko (maybe mini-Dinko)
Strider SA (don't like the price though)
Strider ED

As you can see, there are a few different blade styles but it gives a general idea of the size I'm looking at. The obvious black sheep is the Grayman knife but I out that in there because I like the knife but I don't know if it would be good for what I want it for. To reiterate though, the knife will be used for last ditch self defense and defense against gun grabs. Is there a discernible quality difference in the knives I listed? Which one would be best for the applications I'd (hopefully never) use it for? Is there one I should look at instead of these ones?

I like the idea of going with a custom but first I need to decide what exactly it is I want.

if you want a very inexpensive knife, the boker plus pocket bowie is a good choice. i believe they go for about 30-40 dollars.

The "choil" (which it's not btw) is designed like that purposely. It gives a secure grip in reverse or hammer. Perrin designed it like that from the get go.

Coye Ridgeback is my suggestion.

That Coye is sweet looking.

Another thread was discussing using knives/hawks etc.. on a pig carcass. After that training, many guys went to use different knives, the one's they though would be good for self-defense were not. That Perrin design will keep your hand from sliding up and slicing your own hand. Maybe that Spyderco is what you need, or a similar design.

You say "mid line tip up" for a fixed blade. Is this to be on a MOLLE vest, or is it for low-profile civilian carry?
