I want to start stitching totally by hand, rather than drill holes with the Dremel. What is a good brand Awl to start off with that will last me quite a while but not cost an arm and a leg. All suggestions are appreciated in advance.

The Awl that has lasted the longest for me is made by Osborn.

I've gone through a few in my years, the Osborn has put up with my use and abuse.

Not sure of the model number, but its the one with the leather washer at the top. Darn good product.

I started with this Osborne #144-43, and I like it except mine came with the blade slightly canted in the handle. I'm sure I could have sent it back and gotten a replacement, but I had already moved on to a set of stitching irons to make my holes, and it still worked fine for cleaning up/expanding the holes before stitching, even with a slightly un-true blade.

Then I bought this Tandy 4-in-one set ostensibly because I needed a scratch-awl, and figured it might be useful to have a straight diamond awl as well. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality, it doesn't feel like cheap Tandy crap at all. While a removable blade awl probably isn't ever going to be as good as a nice fixed-blade one, if you were on a budget I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this.
