I been looking at naniwa economical stones (1k/3k and 220 plus holder) 60 dollars, naniwa new super stone around 110 shipping included, naniwa new super stone specialty around 110 shipping included also 1k, 4k shapton diamond stone and finally 1k/5k shapton pro.

Each set is around 100 dollars and Id like to get something thats midrange, before I get a chosera. I would like the stone to last 2 years min. and keep my knife really sharp. Steel is 60RC and I plan to get wood working chisel 65RC.
Naniwa has a bunch of different sets but I can't tell which one to get as there isn't much description. Then there are the shapton plates and shapton pro.

Shaptons are often the direct competition for the chosera stones. They have been argued which is best for some time. They are a premium stone without the premium price.

Shapton stones were designed with chisel sharpening in mind so they would be my recommendation.

in your post the first sharpening you use a DMT coarse, Fine, EF. Are these the diamond bench stones or the stones with the mesh. Would you say that from factory edge 1k,6k, then strop is a decent set up?

Thanks.

^^ those might work good for knives but would not be my choice on chisels.

are you saying dmt diamond plates in low grits aren't good for chisels or old navy's link of waterstone wont work to well with chisels. Im just looking for something that wont wear down fast.

look for a bbw Belgian blue whetstone around 4k a good midrange or knife finisher. they aren't very expensive I paid around 30 for a 6x1.8. very good on water alone or slurry if you are in a big hurry.

Shaptons (pro) will be my choice, most of my geometry settings are made on 220 or 120 shaptones.
for the mid range shapton will do the same job as chosera will.

Nanaiwas are known for their ability to give blades a "shining" finish, but you don't need that right?

I don't have a bunch, but I have a 1000 grit King waterstone I paid around $22 for. Seems to work good enough for me. Also have Norton 220 and 4000/8000 combo. These all work pretty good, and only around $120 or so I think for all 4 stones.

Just another option to kick around.
